OpenAI is stepping up its AI development tools with the launch<\/a> of Codex, a powerful new coding agent now available inside ChatGPT. Announced today, Codex marks what the company describes as its most capable AI software engineering assistant to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Codex is powered by codex-1, a variant of OpenAI\u2019s o3 model, specifically tuned for coding tasks. According to OpenAI, this model produces \u201ccleaner\u201d code, follows instructions more reliably, and iteratively runs its own tests until it achieves passing results. In other words, it doesn\u2019t just suggest code\u2014it checks its work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Running in a sandboxed virtual environment in the cloud, Codex can be linked to a user\u2019s GitHub repositories. Once connected, it\u2019s designed to help developers write features, fix bugs, run tests, and explain code\u2014all within a range of about one to 30 minutes depending on the task. Importantly, the agent operates independently of the user\u2019s local machine, so developers can continue browsing or using their computer while Codex does its thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tool supports multiple tasks at once and is now available to ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Team users. OpenAI says this initial launch phase comes with \u201cgenerous access,\u201d though rate limits will be introduced soon. Users will then have the option to purchase more usage credits, an OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch. The company also plans to bring Codex to ChatGPT Plus and Edu subscribers in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Codex is the latest signal that AI-driven software development tools\u2014sometimes referred to as \u201cvibe coders\u201d\u2014are becoming increasingly mainstream. According to recent remarks from the CEOs of Google and Microsoft, approximately 30% of their companies\u2019 code is now written by AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competitive landscape is heating up as well. In the same week OpenAI launched Codex, the company also confirmed its intent to acquire Windsurf, another AI coding platform focused on natural-language-powered code generation. Meanwhile, the company behind Cursor\u2014an AI-native coding tool that gained traction for its seamless VS Code integration\u2014has reportedly secured $900 million in fresh funding, as reported by TechCrunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With new tools, big acquisitions, and billions in investment pouring in, the message is clear: AI isn\u2019t just helping developers anymore\u2014it\u2019s quickly becoming a key player in the software creation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
