On the one hand there were <a href=\"http:\/\/canadianpress.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5h-as5JAKYNgYYEq_VVOem6DhR8dA\">eight quarters of year over year profit increases<\/a> and revenue and gross margins increased compared to the same quarter (Q2) last year.<\/p>\n<p> On the down side there was a <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB121757335838904049.html\">wider net loss<\/a> of $113 million, or 23 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $37 million, or seven cents a share, a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p> Hackney did explain that the economic environment has been challenging, citing a &#8220;tough economy&#8221; and he mentioned work needs to be done to improve operational effectiveness and margins in the business.<\/p>\n<p> Hackney went on to say, &#8220;Not only are we looking to become more effective and efficient, internally within Nortel from a cost perspective, we&#8217;re taking our solutions externally and helping our customers do the same thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> Other important takeaways were thoughts on the LG-Nortel JV, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tmcnet.com\/usubmit\/2008\/07\/29\/3572791.htm\">Siemens acquisition by the Gores Group<\/a> and what the rest of the years&#8217; earnings will look like.<\/p>\n<p> Here is the  <span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-audio\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tmcnet.com\/blog\/rich-tehrani\/uploads\/podcast-nortel-joel-hackney-080108.mp3\">podcast<\/a><\/span>&#160; for more.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a podcast conversation with Joel Hackney, President of Enterprise Solutions Business at Nortel I had a chance to discuss Nortel&#8217;s earnings which were a mixed bag for the quarter.
