Circuit switched telephony technology is now half a century old or so and it is the predominant way much of the world communicates. It is the lowest common denominator for all digitized communications. While consumers would never accept 1960s technology from auto or computer companies (please don’t mention the airlines) corporations should look to the PSTN as antiquated and legacy. This is exactly what it is and it needs to be upgraded.<\/p>\n

Large carriers still make a tremendous amount of money from the PSTN and are in no rush to see us leave it behind but the reality is the transformation has already begun and companies like Microsoft, Polycom, AudioCodes, TI, Skype and others are leading us forward.<\/p>\n

As it continues, a huge area of focus needs to be on the endpoints as without proper HD endpoints we will not be able to increase the quality of digitized human speech or hear the higher quality audio. Microsoft and its partners, Nortel, Polycom and AudioCodes are some of the companies disseminating HD-enabled devices to the market and the transformation to better quality voice can’t come soon enough as far as I am concerned.<\/p>\n

I am passionate about this topic and I won’t be happy until all calls are in 3D stereo and HD but we are now 1\/3 of the way to what I consider the true future of immersive telephony.<\/b><\/p>\n

I have to say one of the most exciting transformations of communications has been to IP as it allows innovative companies to keep pushing the envelope on VoIP quality. To further capture the importance of this topic I am moderating an HD Voice General Session at ITEXPO<\/a> on February 3rd<\/sup> 2009 in Miami where I hope to spark a lucid discussion about the future of this technology.<\/p>\n

To be clear, I believe no company should be acquiring legacy equipment in any financial market. The logic of buying obsolete endpoints is lost on me – regardless of the specific point on a economic chart we happen to occupy.<\/p>\n

And to be quite honest it will take time for a critical mass of equipment providers to support HD. But now is the time to learn about, investigate, explore and discuss HD IP communications solutions. Things are changing and they are changing fast and there is one great way to stay on top of it.<\/p>\n
