I should mention it is free if you are a current Cablevision customer. The service has come in handy for me in many instances and ensures customer loyalty. Researchers believe this subsidized offering is the reason Cablevision has had more than 70 percent sequential growth in net subscriber additions in the fourth quarter of 2008… A rate higher than any other cable operator in North America.

Well done Cablevision… Well done.

It is worth mentioning that AT&T recently purchased Wayport which means the company has a head start if it wants to compete in the WiFi space.

You know me too well to think I will leave it at that. There are times when the Optimum WiFi service is flaky and it can cut in and out depending on location and device used. Still, I look at Optimum WiFi as my third backup wireless broadband provider as I already carry devices which access Verizon Wireless and AT&T Wireless. I don’t pay anything more for access to Optimum WiFi so when it works, I just thank Cablevision for well – their vision.

Who wouldn’t want to live in this happy world of free WiFi?

One of the smartest and underreported moves in the communications space is Cablevision’s decision to roll out its Optimum WiFi service for free in metropolitan areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
