{"id":7956,"date":"2009-05-20T09:10:18","date_gmt":"2009-05-20T09:10:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.tmcnet.com\/blog\/rich-tehrani\/e-commerce\/get_your_voip_avatar_ready.html"},"modified":"2009-05-20T09:10:18","modified_gmt":"2009-05-20T09:10:18","slug":"get-your-voip-avatar-ready","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.tmcnet.com\/blog\/rich-tehrani\/e-commerce\/get-your-voip-avatar-ready.html","title":{"rendered":"Get Your VoIP Avatar Ready"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even before it was trendy, I was a fan of 3D HD voice &#8211; In fact back in 2004 I <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tmcnet.com\/blog\/rich-tehrani\/ip-communications\/diamondware-in-hd.html\">featured<\/a> DiamondWare onstage at ITEXPO in Miami as a killer app. Over the years DiamondWare began integrating its technology into a virtual world and eventually the company was sold to Nortel and became part of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tmcnet.com\/blog\/rich-tehrani\/fastsearch?blogs=13&amp;query=web.alive\">web.alive<\/a> which I <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tmcnet.com\/blog\/rich-tehrani\/virtual-worlds\/nortels-weblive-brings-virtual-worlds-to-business.html\">covered<\/a> here.<\/p>\n<p>My last visit to the Ottawa campus of Nortel consisted of meetings with the tech team who told me they eventually see avatars everywhere &#8211; on cell phones, computers, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Since that conversation I have been looking for signs of avatar\/communications integration and I did compile a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tmcnet.com\/blog\/rich-tehrani\/virtual-worlds\/mobile-virtual-worlds.html\">vendors<\/a> who had an avatar strategy.<\/p>\n<p>But here is the reality &#8211; if we are going to start seeing more avatar integration in telecom it has to come from our kids &#8211; just like text messaging, Twitter, Facebook and lots of other interesting technologies we once considered oddities.<\/p>\n<p>Recently I learned that Second Life &#8211; the popular consumer based avatar laden community generates <a href=\"http:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2009\/05\/19\/second-life-generates-15-billion-minutes-in-web-voice-calls-to-date\/\">15 billion minutes<\/a> of web voice &#8211; or VoIP calls.
