{"id":8248,"date":"2009-10-15T11:02:50","date_gmt":"2009-10-15T11:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.tmcnet.com\/blog\/rich-tehrani\/e-commerce\/skype_soap_opera_update.html"},"modified":"2009-10-15T11:02:50","modified_gmt":"2009-10-15T11:02:50","slug":"skype-soap-opera-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.tmcnet.com\/blog\/rich-tehrani\/e-commerce\/skype-soap-opera-update.html","title":{"rendered":"Skype Soap Opera Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fascinating bit of <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/BT-CO-20091014-715462.html\">reporting<\/a> from the Wall Street Journal confirms some things that many in the communications industry already knew and some things we didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>eBay doesn&#8217;t get Skype &#8211; this is as obvious as it gets.<\/li>\n<li>The current Skype Management and investors don&#8217;t want to deal with Niklas Zennstrom or Janus Friis<\/li>\n<li>Mike Volpi, past Joost CEO wanted to change Skype&#8217;s underlying technology to SIP &#8211; knowing this would upset Skype&#8217;s founders Zennstrom and Friis &#8211; Coincidentally about five years ago at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itexpo.com\/\">ITEXPO<\/a> Niklas Zennstrom was giving a keynote and at the end of the presentation Andy Voss, founder of Session Border Conrol company Sansay asked why Skype doesn&#8217;t support SIP. Zennstrom replied accurately that there are far more Skype endpoints than SIP endpoints.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What amazes me the most about this situation is that to all the people who understand Skype, there is a tremendous amount of value in the company and it is worth fighting over tooth and nail.
