Today in fact Ma Bell released a flurry of releases explaining where they are upgrading their network. Here are some highlights:

In 2010: AT&T plans to roll out even faster 3G speeds in 25 of the top 30 markets with deployment of HSPA 7.2. This technology doubles the theoretical peak speed of today’s 3G network. As with all wireless connections, typical real-world speeds will be less than the theoretical maximum, and will vary based on a number of factors. AT&T is currently planning for field trials of next generation LTE wireless technology. AT&T expects LTE field trials to begin next year, with deployment beginning in 2011, which is when manufacturers expect a wide variety of compatible devices to be available.

Buffalo, NY: $25million was invested in upgrading the network from 2007-2009. Details about how this money was spent was not available in the release.

Baltimore, MD: $25million was invested in upgrading the network from 2007-2009. Areas of investment include 850 MHz spectrum deployment to 393 cell sites to substantially increase network capacity and in-building signal. In addition the company added 1,180 T1 lines for network capacity reasons as well as 11 new cell sites.

For more, check out the releases regarding the following areas:

Springfield, MA

Framingham, MA – Home of Bose for those of you who don’t know.

Louisville, KY

McAllen, TX

Worcester, MA (rhymes with rooster)

Petersburg, VA

Hampton Roads, VA

Many people who know I work in technology media and ask me at parties what AT&T is going to do if/when their wireless exclusivity with the iPhone fades. Then the typical tale of poor network quality ensues. I suppose from now on when I get such questions I will send this link. The US is a huge place and the complaints I hear about dropped calls on the AT&T network range from New England to California so the investment the company is making can’t come soon enough for millions of AT&T customers.

With so much criticism being aimed at AT&T because of network problems throughout the US, it is good to see the company is continuing to invest in improving its infrastructure.
