Packet8 told me that they just added CallerID with Name. I'm surprised it took them this long to offer it. My Vonage account (which I have yet to switch) has had CallerID with name for quite some time now....

>>Does this mean you will be switching to Packet8 from Vonage?

No. Still evaluating my options. I can get Charter Voice for $24.99 - same price as Vonage. Though I haven't been happy with Charter's broadband service. I've had 6 outages in just a year. Some as long as 5 hours. Though Charter Voice isn't true VoIP - it's "voice over coax". In theory, the uptime would be much better since on a managed network once it hits the head-end.

Optimally, I'd like satellite TV, naked DSL or naked broadband cable, and a reliable VoIP service provider.

Alas, I am still overpaying for cable TV and only get like 4 HDTV channels. I'd love to switch to satellite TV, but would still need to keep at least basic cable in order to get broadband cable. Not very cost effective to have basic cable plus pay for satellite channels. :(

It's a damn racket, I tell ya! They need to make all services ala carte - channels you want, broadband access service, etc. This bundling crap is actually more expensive.

Tom,
I get around this by paying $13.25/mo, the FCC mandated minimum for basic television, and then don't opt for the locals with satellite that cost $5. I know, I'm still overpaying by $8.25, but I don't mind to be getting superior television.
Now, if you want HD locals over sat, you'll want to pay that $5 though..
But, thru comcast as least, if you're non cable, you pay $10/mo extra for 2mbit less. I figure that $3.25 difference is worth it in my book.
Of course, I'm also on a comcastoffers.com promo of $19.95/mo for the first 6 months. :)
