I knew there were rumors of a Skype client for PocketPCs, but Andy alerted me that Skype launched a VoIP client for PocketPCs today. He also offers some interesting analysis on what this could mean and how it could impact the carriers.

For example, he said:
Add Skype out to a new iPaq 6315 with WiFi and better voice quality. I just wonder how soon the wireless carriers like T-Mobile lock down the ports "for security reasons."

LOL! Andy thinks the cell phone carriers won't be too happy that iPaq 6315 users can make free phone calls bypassing their networks.

He continues:
As a Skype user I'm thrilled by this. I'll have to try this at a Starbucks soon. The idea of a PDA with Skype and Skype Out is very disruptive.

Andy - I couldn't agree with you more!

Most long-term Skype users though, will tell you if they are connected to the Internet via WiFi ( though I'm assuming that 802.11g is an improvement on b) and suggest another way of getting hold of them. Until the client (PPC as opposed to flesh & blood) can create a tunnel to the access point ensuring some form of QOS the inherent latency issue becomes unbearable. h...he...........ll..o

As a test send a multi-mb file and talk on Skype on a laptop at the same time, now multiply that by all the corporate types on an always-on vpn in a starbucks/airport etc and I somehow feel that the mobile companies aren't going to be too fussed in the short-term.

I imagine that they are sitting and waiting for mobile SIP phones to get beyond very early adopters before pouncing to secure the revenues for themselves.
