A bit of dark news closed out last week, at least, it's news of a darker variety for Microsoft fans. Capcom closed out the week with the announcement that Street Fighter 4 was making its way to consoles and PC, but only to the PlayStation 4. Capcom put up a teaser trailer at the end of the week, and though the trailer subsequently went private, there was enough exposure to make the point clear.
It's one of the great principles of the Internet, that once something hits—especially something like a trailer for one of the biggest fighting games around—it tends to stay hit regardless of what kind of copyright claims go out. It's both blessing and curse, in its own strange way, but it is what it is. At any rate, those concerned because they missed the trailer may not have long to wait; reports suggest the trailer was to hit the VGX event. The trailer itself was something of a look back at the series, according to reports, and included a look at professionals and regular kids alike enjoying the series.
But further reports suggest that it isn't just Microsoft getting snubbed on this run, but also arcades which will likely go without a release here. That's a particularly unnerving point, as the Street Fighter series was pretty much born and raised in the arcades. Granted, arcade fortunes have gone somewhat downhill—who am I kidding? They haven't gone down, they've gone clear through the dirt and have started digging—in recent years but there are still arcades out there, particularly in Japan, and that should have meant an arcade release of some kind.
Still, the big point here is that Microsoft is losing out on a Capcom brand, at least for the time being. Exclusive tends to mean exclusive—there's still no sign of Dead Rising 3 on PS4, after all—but is this part of something bigger? Is this part of a move away from Xbox One to PlayStation 4?
It's still, of course, much too early to tell if this is part of a trend or just part of a one-off decision that Capcom made. It could be that Capcom is splitting the difference, seeing how one title does on one system and another on another. It could be that Capcom's thinking of a long-term change. It could just be Capcom owed Sony a favor. But it's still something that bears watching because it could mean the difference down the road. We know that Sony has been outselling Microsoft into the grave for most of the last year—Black Friday proved a different story—but is that enough to make Capcom interested in exclusives with Sony?
Only time will tell just where this all goes, but one thing is quite clear; the game market is a strange place full of fluctuations, and it bears regular monitoring just to see where it goes.
