Alcatel-Lucent Demonstrates Power of 100G with Softbank Telecom

By Susan J. Campbell

Network traffic has increased exponentially as consumers and businesses alike are demanding video streaming and on-demand solutions through their desktops, laptops, notebooks, tablets and smartphone devices. Alcatel-Lucent is developing solutions to help carriers meet this growing demand.

Softbank Telecom Corp. recognized the value offered in Alcatel-Lucent's 100G solutions. With help from Alcatel-Lucent, Softbank will deploy its next-generation optical networking solution with the ability to scale up to 100 gigabits per second.

Alcatel-Lucent is making its 100G-capable 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) featuring next-generation coherent technology available for Softbank. The carrier's network backbone will require fewer regeneration sites and enjoy a reduced operational cost and power consumption.

This Next-Generation Coherent technology from Alcatel-Lucent is designed to deliver unprecedented resilience to optical transmission impairments across the network. As a result, 100G rates on each wavelength are enabled to support the transfer of 100,000 MP3 files in 60 seconds, or more than 15,000 HDTV channels streaming live at the same time.

According to Rajeev Singh-Molares, president of Alcatel-Lucent's activities in Asia-Pacific, the 100G offering from Alcatel-Lucent uses next-generation coherent technology to deliver unprecedented capacity and scalability at optimized total cost of ownership. The solution provides the lowest cost-per-bit with continuous bandwidth, scaling, automation and reporting.

SBTM and Alcatel-Lucent are working together to provide a highly flexible, future-proof network that will scale up to 100G. SBTM is aiming to support current and future bandwidth demands with reduced time-to-market. The 100G offering is part of Alcatel-Lucent's Converged Backbone Transformation solution, a key component of its High Leverage Network.

Alcatel-Lucent aims to be the leader in the commercial deployment of 100G next generation coherent technology. The company recently unveiled its first commercially viable solution designed to carry a single 100G on a wavelength through the use of "Next-Generation Coherent" technology.

Signh-Molares also recently commented on the company's plan to return to a growth path in Asia, how the iPad will impact network operators and where acquisitions play into the company's strategy.
