Texas Counties In Trouble For Posting Social Security Numbers Online

March 6, 2007

According to a report in Computerworld, Fort Bend County in Texas is under a lot of heat for illegally posting public records with Social Security numbers online.

Late last month, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot ruled tat such practoces are illegal.

Abbot's ruling has sparked alarm among several other Texas counties that also include this information in some public documents.

"When we first saw the [attorney general's] opinion, we were just panicked. We were like, 'This couldn't be happening,'" said Janice Gray, district clerk at Coryell County and vice president of the County and District Clerks Association of Texas.

The discomfort apparently being felt at the Texas County level has sparked a bill by Texas Rep. Jim Keffer. The bill would permit county and district clerks to continue to disclose Social Security numbers in records they choose to post online.

Abbot said he would hold off on acting on the matter for 60 days as state legislators debate this issue.
