New Bill Would Force Streaming Radio To Use DRM, Thwarting Recording and Ripping

January 15, 2007

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein has just re-introduced the PERFORM ACT.

Here's a link to the full text of the bill.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation notes that the bill would hamper the ability of consumers to record satellite and digital radio transmissions by thwarting their ability to select and pla back those selections based on genre, artist or song title. The free movement of recordings in a home network might also be jeopardized.

Internet radio would also suffer by needing to undertake moves from MP3 streaming to DRM formats. These formats would not let consumers use software tools such as Streamripper to record programming you might want to listen to later.
