Viacom Sues Google/YouTube for $1 billion

March 13, 2007

Viacom says this morning it has filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Google Inc. and its YouTube operation for copyright infringement.

The language in the suit refers to  massive intentional copyright infringement" of Viacom's entertainment assets. Viacom indicates they also want an injunction against further practices of this type.

What's set Viacom off is their belief that nearly 160,000 unauthorized clips of its programming have been uploaded to YouTube. From there, these clips are said to have been viewed more than 1.5 billion times.

Details to follow.
