Ban Against Qualcomm Chip Imports is Upheld

August 7, 2007

Earlier today, the Bush administration upheld a June decision by the U.S. International Trade Commission upholding an import ban on chips made by Qualcomm Inc. that have been held in violation of a patent held by chip-making rival Broadcom Corp.

In stating her decision, U.S. Trade R epresentative Susan Schwab said that the need to uphold intellectual property rights laws overruled all other priorities in this case.

"I have decided to permit the limited exclusion order and cease and desist order that the U.S. ITC issued in its investigation," Schwab said.

The import ban goes into effect Tuesday.
