Court: Qualcomm Infringed On Three Broadcom Patents
A U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, Calif., ruled yesterday that Qualcomm had infringed on three patents that rival Broadcom had acquired.
CNN reported that the three patents dealt with different cellphone technologies, including chip architecture for video processing, network compatibility and another patent which deals with the 'walkie-talkie' function of a cell phone.
The original suit charged infringement of five patents, but that number was cut to three after Broadcom dismissed one and the court stayed the case on the second patent.
Qualcomm says it will appeal.
The two companies are also fighting it out before the U.S. International Trade Commission. Broadcom has brought infringement claims up before that body, charging Qualcomm with allegedly infringing on a patent involving battery-saving technology. If the claim is upheld, Qualcomm could face a U.S. import ban on some of its wireless phone chips.
