KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Oct. 1 -- Motorola, Inc. announced today that its subsidiary in Malaysia has been chosen by Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad to expand and upgrade Celcom's existing GSM 900/1800 network with GPRS and EDGE capabilities providing wireless communication across the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak.

When fully deployed, Celcom subscribers in Sabah and Sarawak will benefit from a wide coverage of high-quality voice calls and GPRS services. The enhancements will also enable Celcom to deliver value-added services such as MMS in a timely and cost-effective manner, thereby helping to reduce customer churn and improving revenue streams.

The project, which uses Motorola Reach GSM solutions, will start in September 2006 and is expected to be completed by March 2007.

As the telecommunications sector in Malaysia evolves from voice to data services, operators such as Celcom must have the capacity to serve the voice market today, and be equipped with the ability to migrate quickly and economically to GPRS, EDGE and UMTS platforms. Motorola's Reach solutions allow operators to build upon existing data solutions once operators are ready to migrate their services to the next level.

"Our continuous growing customer base of 7.8 million customers nationwide and ability to sustain status quo as market leader in East Malaysia is a testament to the high accolades we have earned by ensuring customer satisfaction since starting the GSM 900/1800 service," said Dato' Shazalli Ramly, Chief Executive Officer, Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad. "In deploying this expansion system, we expect to boost the competitiveness of our GSM offering in the Malaysian market, ensuring that our current subscriber base continues to expand."

"We are committed to bringing advanced mobile services to end consumers in Sabah and Sarawak and are excited to play an active role in shaping the future of telecommunications in East Malaysia," said Jay Andersen, vice president, sales for Motorola Networks & Enterprise, South and East Asia. "Motorola continues to be at the forefront to deliver compelling network services and solutions to help carriers and operators, such as Celcom, to stay competitive."

As a world leader of GSM networks, Motorola is committed to helping operators deliver cost effective network solutions and providing the highest quality of service, reliability, and coverage to subscribers. Motorola's Reach GSM solutions address the business needs of operators effectively by deploying scalable networks that reduce cost of ownership with the potential to increase revenue opportunities through extensive coverage.
