XML VoIP API by Microsoft Live Meeting and Lypp

October 15, 2007

Erik Lagerway, a former TMC blogger, is excited about his REST-based VoIP API and wholesale VoIP termination service, which he claims decreases the time to market for developers when integrating VoIP into any application. Erik emailed  me, "We have built a REST-based VoIP API that will fast track VoIP Integration for any developer that understands XML," said Lypp CEO Erik Lagerway.

Here is a sample VoIP API call, which as you will notice uses XML:

Request:

GET /users/{user_id}/conferences
Accept: application/xml Response:

200 OK
Content-Type: application/xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<conferences type="array">
<conference>
<id type="integer">{conference_id}</id>
<created-at type="datetime">{created_at}</created-at>
<updated-at type="datetime">{updated_at}</updated-at>
<state>{state}</state>
<scheduled-to-start-at type="datetime">{scheduled_to_start_at}</scheduled-to-start-at>
<started-at type="datetime">{started_at}</started-at>
<ended-at type="datetime">{ended_at}</ended-at>
</conference>
...
</conferences>
This use of XML as the VoIP API reminds me that Microsoft Live Meeting 2007, Microsoft's collaborative online meeting application featuring VoIP and videoconferencing also leverages XML to allow you to schedule meetings, manager users, and perform reporting functionality. The APIs actually look quite similar come to think of it. They use similar XML calls to create a conference.

Microsoft Unified Communications Client API SDK released + UC 2007 Launch

October 12, 2007

I've been extremely busy since returning from vacation, but wanted to let everyone know that a few days ago Microsoft released their Microsoft Unified Communications Client API (UCCA) SDK, which enables you to build client applications for Office Communications Server 2007. Essentially you can use this API to integrate Office Communications Server 2007's VoIP, Video, Instant Messaging, Conferencing, Telephony, Contact Management and Presence functionality into your applications. Pretty much anything you can do with Communicator you can do using UCCA. Very cool!

VoIP Test Set for Office Communications Server 2007

October 11, 2007

Microsoft just released a tool to assist in OCS 2007 deployment called VoIP Test Set for Office Communications Server 2007. VoIP Test Set for Office Communications Server 2007 supports emulation of a SIP endpoint to test connectivity. It can also simulate a Mediation Server or a gateway. This is great news for enterprises that want to play with OCS 2007 before they go out and spend money on a hardware gateway.

Emulation options include the following:

- Client emulation - To emulate a Microsoft Office Communicator client, you specify a SIP-enabled user account to register with Office Communications Server.

I'm now a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional)!

October 9, 2007

I'm proud to announce that I was selected a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional)! According to Microsoft's MVP Awards FAQs, "Over 100 million people participate in technical communities but there are only about 3,500 MVPs worldwide."

Wow, one of only 3,500 select Microsoft MVPs. I am truly honored! I was only vaguely familiar with Microsoft MVPs. I knew you had to be nominated in order to win and that only a select few get to be an MVP. Sure enough, according to the FAQs, "Outstanding technical community members are nominated by their peers, Microsoft employees, and MVPs. Each year a panel of Microsoft employees reviews the contributions of each nominee for quality, quantity, and level of impact on the technical community.

Skype Could Trump Facebook in Social Networking

September 26, 2007

Facebook is the most popular social networking site right now. Putting aside some of my anti-social networking views for a moment (due to tons of LinkedIn, Facebook, Myspace email invites I get), why isn't Skype the #1 social networking application? Just to compare, Skype has over 220 million registered accounts and 9 million concurrent users as of January 2007. Facebook on the other hand claims 39 million active users as of August 2007.

It's tricky to compare their "active" user base numbers, since Skype users may shut down the Skype application or turn off their PC at the end of the day.

USB 3.0 Standard Coming

September 19, 2007

USB 3.0 connector prototype

Intel, Microsoft, and other industry leaders have formed the USB 3.0 Promoter Group to create a superspeed 4Gbps USB 3.0 standard that can deliver over 10 times the speed of today's USB 2.0 connection. The current USB 2.0 version has a top data-transfer rate of 480 megabits per second. Others involved in the technology include HP, NEC Corporation, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments Incorporated, and will target fast sync-and-go transfer applications in the PC, consumer and mobile segments.

Fortunately, USB (Universal Serial Bus) 3.0 will backward-compatible with current USB devices.

Gary Hermansen leaves Global IP Sound

September 11, 2007

Gary Hermansen, CEO of Global IP Sound (GIPS), has left the organization. Jon Arnold told me the news at the IT Expo Bloggers Dinner last night while we were discussing GIPS. I mentioned to Jon how I had a fairly heated discussion with Gary last year about Skype potentially dropping GIPS as the voice engine / adaptive codec of choice. Gary was displeased that I "pondered" that Skype might drop GIPS in favor of a competitor's solution.

Unified Communications Deployment Blues

August 29, 2007

Today, unified communications is being touted by many, including Microsoft with their Office Communications Server 2007 (OCS 2007) due out later this year and Cisco with their aptly named  Cisco Unified Communications. Unified communications often combines many or all of the following: instant messaging/IM with business presence, VoIP, videoconferencing, online collaboration, desktop sharing, and unified messaging (email, voicemail, fax in your Inbox). Of these applications, which all run on your network, VoIP and videoconferencing are extremely sensitive to jitter, latency, and packet loss. Unfortunately, many enterprises are beginning to deploy unified communications without performing any pre-deployment testing of their network to ensure these applications meet strict quality of service standards.

Dialogic DMG4000 Media Gateways launched

August 21, 2007

Dialogic today announced the availability of their Dialogic 4000 Media Gateway Series, including the DMG4060 DTI Media Gateway and the DMG4120 DTI Media Gateway. The Dialogic 4000 Media Gateway Series (aka "DMG4000 gateways”) are a set of integrated systems designed to connect Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 to existing PBX systems and PSTN networks.

It uses a standard rack-mount server running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and is what Dialogic classifies as a "basic-hybrid gateway” designed to provide both the media gateway function and the Mediation Server role of Office Communications Server 2007.  Mediation Server provides PSTN and PBX interoperability, high-fidelity audio via the Microsoft RT Audio Codec, and VoIP security for Office Communications Server 2007.
