SunRocket ceases, Vonage fights for the scraps

To no one's surprise, SunRocket has ceased operations. Vonage certainly didn't waste any time in putting on their vulture cap to pick at the carcass of SunRocket. While I think it is smart marketing for Vonage to go after SunRocket's customers, I can't help but have this "icky" feeling. It's like going to a funeral and a family member starts telling you about this great business opportunity he wants you to join. Give the dead a day of peace. There is always tomorrow. Anyway, according to today's news release:
Vonage is offering a way for SunRocket customers to transition their phone number over to Vonage, and also receive the added benefit of two months free service. Customers receive this benefit when they sign up for the U.S. Residential Premium Unlimited Plan. Upon request, potential customers can rest easy knowing qualified phone numbers can be transferred over to Vonage and expedited at no charge. Vonage offers over 25 features at no additional cost, such as call forwarding, call waiting, call transfer, and the ability to keep your number for life. Vonage also offers a free device after instant rebate. SunRocket customers interested in this offer can receive more information by calling 800-833-4806.

Sunrocket going out of business, not so surprising, but I do feel a bit sorry for the 200,000 or so customers of Sunrocket who will lose their service.

Would suggest that they take a look at the magicJack www.magicjack.com, the calls with this device have the best quality I have ever experienced and it is also the easiest device to install and start using. The best thing is that all you pay for is the device and you are up and running and can make local and long distance calls for free. No monthly fees and no bills.

As many have heard, sunrocket went out of business in the last 24 hours
shutting off phones of everyone (at least according to the ny times). My
phone got shut down this morning too with sunrocket so I was forced to find
a new company, and just found one an hour ago with this small company called
Voiceral. Looks like they have been in busines a few years, and have some
positive press and the thing that hooked me was the special deal for
sunrocket customers who have to switch due to sunrocket going out of
business. Seemed like a good deal with free priority shipping upgrade for
sunrocket switchers, with a waived activation fee. I will post later to let
you know how it goes. The special offer was

With Sunrocket having shut down, I wanted to mention that myphonecompany is still alive and kicking. They have a promotion where you get the fourth month free with agent sign up... and they also have a plan called mydevice that allows you to use your existing equipment and myphonecompany service for a lower fee. They also have an expanded international calling radius. To find out more, go to the agent site at www.rip2p.com and click the sign up link to be redirected to their site to sign up and receive your fourth month free! You can even port your existing SunRocket Number to myphonecompany for FREE! MyPhoneCompany requires 911 service on your account due to new FCC regulations. It costs a one time $15.00 activation fee, and is an additional $1.50 per month. This surcharge will appear on any and all VOIP services due to the new FCC Regulations.

scaps => scraps

I disagree with the thought that Vonage or other VOIP should give Sunrocket customers like myself a day to mourn. I DONT HAVE A PHONE!! With 200,000 people ordering from new companies it will be first come first serve to get hooked up and I want to know who will offer me the best deal NOW. Once I was able to confirm that SunRocket was no longer going to give me service I checked my credit card statement, and Sunrocket had just billed me for my second renewal year on July 17th, 2007. I immediately disputed that charge as I had no phone service, and found that VIATALK is offering to buy out up to 6 months of SUNROCKET contracts, and they are offering $199.00/year unlimited. I promptly signed up with VIATALK. I will need a new adapter so I will likely be without a phone for a week.
SunRocket was a great deal while it lasted, but I am not going to stand around shedding tears.

****ATTENTION FORMER SUNROCKET CLIENTS****

If you are a former business client of Sun Rocket, then you alreday know of the collapse and shut down of your provider. Aptela (www.aptela.com), the leader in VOIP and Hosted PBX for businesses is ready to assist you. I myself, have already helped nearly 20 former clients already. You will be able to use your current adapter with our service as well.

You will not have to worry about Aptela vanishing in the middle of the night. We've been here for awhile and are here to stay.

Sun Rocket had good price options while it lasted. It is unfortunate to find out the reason when we try to figure out why our phone was not working.
Scrambling to keep the existing number I signed up with Vonage and I have to tell you their offer was pretty nice (two months free, shipping free, gizmo free, taxes refunded etc etc.) They only charged me $1.00. I think it was a great deal compared to what others offer. The question is how long VOIP vendors are going to last at this rate. I am not going to sign up for another 1 year contract. Once burned twice shy :-)
I am glad Vonage was there!

Well, I'm a SunRocket refugee, as it were... and as of now, my SR is still up.
.
That is, I'm still getting calls, and I can still make calls over my SR box.
.
I started my VOIP experience with Vonnage, which delivered everything they promised. But in the cut-throat world of VOIP, they decided to also be the most expensive out there.
.
In the interim, I stumbled across ViaTalk, which offered roughly the same services at about 1/3rd the cost. Since Vonnage was month-to-month and the bail out was cheap, I dumped Vonnage and went with ViaTalk.
.
Qwest, who had been providing all of my phone services, screwed me in a variety of ways. I wanted to dump them as fast as possible... but until they offered naked DSL, I was stuck, because in the rural area where I live, they were the only game in town.
.
So, I switched to ViaTalk for my fax line. Then, when I discovered that Qwest was offering DSL only, I saw my opportunity. I waited for the first BOGOF offer; called ViaTalk (who also ran BOGOF offers) and asked them for a deal (This was, apparently, before they offered their second line service) which they would not do; and I went with SunRocket since they were running that special at that moment.
.
SR was also everything they promised. My number was ported in a few days, the service started, and another nightmare with Qwest ensued.
.
All of that said, I went to the SR website, and call forwarded my SR number to my ViaTalk number. So far, that works well, and the transition has been seamless.
.
In the interim, rumors run rampant about SR's service being picked up by other providers. I don't know if that's going to happen or not, but I signed up for an additional line for ViaTalk, and have started the process of porting my number over to that line...
.
In the end, despite the inconvenience, the switch to SR has saved me substantial dollars over what Vonnage was charging over the same time period, and a LOT of money less than Qwest was charging.
.
Still, talk about a soap opera!
