VoIP on Treo 650 and Motorola ROKR, SLVR, and RAZR

EQO Communications, developer of presence-enabled calling and instant messaging solutions and services, today announced EQO Mobile for Skype on the popular Palm TREO 650 and Motorola ROKR, SLVR, and RAZR handsets. EQO actually has been calling me for the past week to try and give me the news, but I've been preparing for a major upgrade of Movable Type from 2.661 to 3.2, so I neglected to call them back. Rich Tehrani told me their news this morning, so I figured the news was worth sharing. I was one of the first to discuss EQO back in February in a blog post worth checking out.

The announcement was made at the CTIA Wireless 2006 conference, and it brings the number of EQO-supported handset models to more than 45, including some of the most popular devices from Nokia, Motorola, Palm, and Sony-Ericsson.

EQO uses a combination of a phone-resident J2ME client and a presence-enabled Voice-over-IP (VoIP) signaling network to bridge online identity, VoIP calling, and Instant Messaging services to more than 200 million J2ME-capable mobile phone handsets already in use worldwide.

Microsoft sells 500,000 Windows Mobile Phones

According to the NY Times, Microsoft has won a huge order for their Windows Mobile software - 500,000 handsets to be precise. Is this another nail in the coffin for Blackberry? Certainly seems that way. According to the NY Times article, "Microsoft expects to increase its mobile unit's sales to $1 billion in one to three years, from $337 million last year, and break the dominance of the Research In Motion BlackBerry wireless e-mail device.

BridgePort Networks shows off Dual-mode capability

BridgePort Networks
is making some interesting announcments at the CTIA Wireless show. Most importantly they are demonstrating how they leverages SIP and IMS to demonstrate seamless handover based on 'VCC' technical requirements. If you're not familiar with IMS or even if you are, you should subscribe to TMC's newest publication, IMS Magazine which covers IMS exclusively. IMS is going to be a huge driver of VoIP and mobile applications in the next couple of years.

Also at the CTIA show they are introducting a USB MobileSTICK product that turns a laptop into a mobile phone.

Verizon, Dell Offer Pay-As-You-Go Broadband

According to ABIResearch.com, Verizon, Dell plan to offer Pay-As-You-Go Broadband with Verizon's EV-DO technology embedded into select Dell laptops. Teaming up with Dell is a very smart way for Verizon to shore up their marketshare in the high-speed long-distance wireless broadband arena (WiFi is typically short distance). If I have to buy a laptop I certainly would consider one with integrated high-speed WAN wireless. We have a few "shared" Verizon EVDO cards here in the office and I can't tell you how many times these cards have shuffled hands for sales people and editorial going on business trips.

Microsoft BetaPlace outage and Exchange ActiveSync MSFP problem

I was just on Microsoft BetaPlace downloading the Microsoft Device Emulator 1.0 Community Preview to test Windows Mobile 5.0 with Exchange ActiveSync and the download timed-out at 98%. 2% remaining? Such a tease... I then tried accessing http://beta.microsoft.com from and it too timed-out.

Samsung B600 10 Megapixel phone launched at CeBIT. The Samsung B600 is an amazing piece of technology. It has more mexapixels than many high-end single-purpose digital cameras and it doubles as a cell phone. Convergence at its best!

Covad buys NextWeb California's largest fixed-wireless provider

This morning, Covad Communications Group announced the closing of its acquisition of NextWeb, California’s largest fixed-wireless broadband provider for business.

This wireless connectivity helps augment Covad’s existing wireline broadband and VoIP capabilities and can also reduce the company’s dependence on the Bell companies. Covad will issue approximately 16 million shares of stock and pay approximately $3.9 million in cash for NextWeb.

I should point out that one WiMAX base station can serve a five-mile radius and the first WiMAX certified equipment is expected will be available later this year. Covad has been trialing “pre-WiMAX” equipment in the Bay Area for some time now.

Global IP Sound (GIPS) is now available on the Sony Ericcson P990 phone

Global IP Sound (GIPS), a popular VoIP codec/voice engine used by Skype, Google Talk, and others, is now available on the Sony Ericcson P990 phone using the OptiMobile softclient called WBX UniPhone. I wonder if this is the first non-Windows mobile device that supports the GIPS voice engine? Anyway, check out the news.
