FCC Wireless Spectrum Auction Continues: Some Blocks Doing Better Than Others
We now have eight rounds of bidding concluded in the FCC 700 MGz wireless spectrum auction.
As it stands now, a total of some $6.1 billion has been bid for all five spectrum blocks. Monday's top bid- bidders are not identified- was $2.976 billion, says the FCC.
Round nine, which begins this morning, carries a minimum bid of $3.419 billion. $10 billion has been cited by the FCC for a goal.
If there's a brake on the process, it seems to be for the C block of spectrum, and the licenses that will involve heavy use from first responders. That's still stuck at $472 million, the same price as in round 2.
If $1 billion is not raised by bidding for this spectrum, the FCC has indicated it will likely schedule a separate auction for the C block in the near future.
