February 16, 2007
An Illinois state senator has introduced legislation that , if passed, would prohibit access to social networking sites at public libraries and in public schools.

The legislation is entitled the Social Networking Website Protection Act.  Effective January 1, 2008 if passed, it was proposed by Sen. Matt Murphy, a Republican from the Chicago suburb of Palatine.

No specific sites are named- yet.

"This is really a conversation starter at this point," Murphy told Computerworld magazine this week. "The intention is to start a dialogue between the interested parties to see if at some point we can do something to ... move the goal of making it easier for parents to keep kids safe on the Internet."

Sen. Murphy said that a list of prohibited sites might be drawn up after consultations with police departments.
