Texas Bill Would Mandate Recycling Option Labeling on PCs, Peripherals
A bill has been approved by the Texas state legislature that would compel labeling for the recycling of outdated computers, computing peripherals, and some consumer electronics goods.
House Bill 2714 calls for manufacturers to place a sticker on any computer or monitor they want to sell in the state of Texas. The sticker would tell consumers they have the right to return the equipment to the vendor for recycling or reuse for no additional fee.
Each manufacturer would have to file a yearly report to state legislators noting the combined weight of computing equipment they have either reused or recucled.
Dell, which is by far the leading computing hardware manufacturer in Texas, is generally in favor of this bill. No skin off their back, for they already have free return-for-recycle policies in place.
House Bill 2714 is on its way to the desk of Texas Governor Rick Perry. Although the Republican Governor has not indicated his position, most observers expect him to sign the bill.
