USF Reforms Would Target Rural High-Speed Internet Access
U.S. Senator and Commerce Committee chair Daniel Inouye, D-Hawait, says he will work with panel members from parties to write legislation that would overhaul the universal service fund.
A source tells the National Journal that such an overhaul would likely be aimed at enabling the fund to enable rural high-speed Internet access more efficiently than the fund does now.
Such reforms would likely place more of an emphasis on directed subsidies for high-speed Internet access in rural areas, and perhaps a cap on USF fees- which are collected but not specified for needed missions.
