What's the Frequency, Fabio?: EU debates 900 MHz vs. 2.5 GHz
The European Union says they plan to widen the number of frequencies available for 3G networks.
But it is the frequencies themselves that are being debated.
Although carriers prefer "low bands" such as 900MhZ because signals at that frequency can penetrate buildings and travel greater distances encompassing rural areas- the EU really wants 2.5 Ghz as a primariy option.
"We are concentrating on the 2.5 GHz band," European Commission Information Society Director General Fabio Colasanti told Reuters on Wednesday.
But it sounds like he is willing to compromise- after the EC gets their way, though.
"We are discussing with member states introducing more flexibility in 3G- expanding to (the) 2.5 GhZ) band and maybe also 900 (MHz could be an option," Colasanti added.
