Telecom Operators Need to Improve Leadership, Customer Experience Management

By Erin Harrison

We won’t sugarcoat it: European telecom operators are not reaching their full market potential due to a lack of leadership and customer visibility. In fact, just 12 percent of C-suite executives are leading the customer experience agenda at major operators, according to a new survey conducted by European Communications—the results of which appear in a recent special edition, “Customer Experience.”

Of concern, no one is leading a customer experience effort in 8 percent of operators. In a majority of cases, (41 percent) individual managers are taking it upon themselves, while for 39 percent of respondents, a dedicated customer experience manager has been put in charge.

While the findings cast a negative shadow on the customer experience focus by European service providers (SPs), the study’s results should be motivation for the SPs’ IT decision makers who want to turnaround their customer experience efforts and become more profitable.

A lack of coherent leadership naturally feeds down to a fragmented implementation of strategy. Although a majority of operators (45 percent) said customer experience is treated as an integral part of everything their organization does across all business units, that means a majority does not.

Stick to your New Years' Resolution with Sticky Blueberry Scones

February 7, 2012

Well, hello there, devoted Techfast readers!

It has been quite some time since our last posting from the Techfast team, but that is probably because we were caught up in making ITEXPO East 2012 happen in Miami last week. The show was grand, the attendees thriving, and the atmosphere buzzing with the most up-to-date news in the communications technology space.

We explored sessions with esteemed panelists from all sectors of IT, VoIP communications, and cloud computing. Every session was informative, and we learned about "keeping your head in the cloud" in addition to the challenges the enterprise faces when implementing session border controllers.

Mergers on the Carrier and Cookie Fronts

December 15, 2011

This Techfast contribution was written by Tamare Wolf, Web Editor for TMCnet.

We here at TMC usually find ourselves up to our ears in news of successful mergers and acquisitions between companies across all industries and verticals. However, as of late, wireless giants T-Mobile and AT&T are defying the odds as this proposed merger has turned into quite a convoluted affair, as other players in the space, like Sprint, and now the U.S. government have moved to block the acquisition.

Talk about Hybrids... with Chocolate Pretzel Doughnuts

December 7, 2011

This week in the TMC offices, we are contemplating hybrids: phones used as flashlights, video game consoles as TV suppliers, and pretzels doubling as doughnuts.

It appears as though, in our heavily multi-tasking world, we require people and objects to be many things at once and do many things at once. Writers should also be photographers, engineers should be designers, our personal devices should be our best friends.

With the advent of Siri, the magical voice software on the iPhone 4S, we are wondering how heavy the reliance on this new technology will become for users.

What These Granola Bars and The Microwave Have in Common

November 10, 2011

They were both accidents.

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade, but when life hands you weird macarons, make... granola bars? Sure.

We all have "oops!" moments. Most recently, Mariela Castro Espin, the niece of Fidel Castro, when she noted how impressed she was with the legalized prostitution system in Amsterdam.

Dating and Doughnuts

November 8, 2011

With a headline to this blog post that could instill fear and love simultaneously, we say 'Happy Tuesday!' What better way to celebrate being alive than to eat some doughnuts and talk about online dating? Can't think of another right now...

The explosion of online dating is affecting entire generations of humans, albeit ones that live in first world countries, but, according to this awesome article by Tracey Schelmetic, online dating has progressed so rapidly that  it is now being surpassed by "mobile dating."

It took a while for us to get past the notion of it being "OK" or less taboo to meet a potential romantic partner through a computer. Now we've got to face up to the idea that it's happening over smartphones. "Turns out that 61 percent of those surveyed say they are more likely to hook up on a mobile dating app than on a traditional dating site, according to the graphic, which was reproduced on All Things Facebook," writes Schelmetic.

Today's Techfast: Texting or Testing?

November 3, 2011

There are few things that separate us from the "lower forms," those being animals, plants, protozoa, etc. One is cigarette-smoking, which is stupid. Another is cooking, which is awesome. (Raw vegans will disagree with me.) I hesitate to use “the invention of technology” as a distinguishing characteristic of humans vs.
