Wireless Explosion in Asia?
In the "This Just In: Asia Is A Pretty Big Friggin' Market" category: (Just don't label me a cynic - Greg Galitzine has that title wrapped up here at TMC)
Technology market research firmIn-Stat reported today that Asia ispoised to possibly become the world's largest mobile telecommunications market within the next five to10 years.
According to a press statement, In-Stat forecasts that by 2009, Asian mobile telecommunications revenue will reach $260 billion, representing a whopping $120 billion increase from 2004. India will experience the fastest growth in the regional market, with a 32.8 percent annual growth rate in subscribers, and 31.1 percentrevenue growth for the period spanning 2004-09.
"In-Stat sees Asia as the most exciting market for investors, operators, equipment vendors and handset manufacturers," In-Stat analyst Bryan Wang said in a prepared statement. "Operators like NTT DoCoMo and Singapore Telecom are seeking investment opportunities to expand outside their home markets."
In-Stat's report, "Asia Wireless Annual Report: Subscribers, Handsets, and Infrastructure,"reveals, among other things,the following information:
- South Korean handset vendors like Samsung and LG are "significantly gaining market share in both high-end products and in developing markets;
- Sony Ericsson is still the big winner in the equipment arena within the region; and
- Because of their large deployments of CDMA technology, U.S. equipment vendors, such as Lucent andMotorola, have "made significant headway in theAsian market."
