I have some comments to say. First what you are saying about Sony "Sorry Sony, but you really screwed yourself this time", I think is a ridiculous statement. Now don't get me wrong, it was a completely stupid thing that Sony did, but how many other major corporations have done as stupid or worse things. What I think about all these major corporations, Ex: Dell, Microsoft, Sony, ect. Is that there all a bunch of "Greedy, money hugging, screw everyone else, BASTARDS!" To put it mildly.

That's not the point though. The point is that you should not blame a whole entire Corp. for one Screw-up. The root-kit was put out by the "Music branch" of Sony (obviously) that’s excluding the Electronics, Games, Movies, and, Financial Services branches. Ok, Hypothetically speaking, could the root-kit been made just to help slow down on pirated music, which in theory would stop the amount of music being downloaded, then would lead to more CD sales. CD's - pirated music= $$$$$$.

Now for my conclusion. Big corporations do not make things to lose money, its visa-versa. The root-kit was not meant to steal you personal information ex: bank account numbers, CC numbers, ect. We know that Sony ps3 copied XBOX 360 in every way but some things they just improved.

It's true that Sony & Microsoft are pretty much peas in a pod. It's also true that until recently (and still so, to a large degree) Microsoft was/is suffering from an image problem. I still don't think they're cool, but over the last year, I've also stopped thinking that Sony are cool.

Unfortunately in this battle to stamp out the other guy, the only losers are gamers. - that is, gamers outside of America. - Because US gamers seem to prefer, US style games (by which i mean, big guns, lots of bullets, fast, explosive, adrenalin fuelled)

Unfortunately with, what looks like the turn of the tide for playstation (and respect to microsoft on a business level for making such HUGE dents in Sony's monopoly) - we will see the demise of more intelligent gaming.

Japanese style games, tend to be 1)more original 2) more atmospheric 3) more subtle and complex 4) apeal to the intelligence gland rather than just the adrenal.

I own an xbox360(aswell as every other console), aside from GRAW i'm still waiting for a game that I want to own. Theyre pumping out crap cos they've got little competition, holding back any promising titles until Sony finally makes it down to the battle field with their next gen console.

Xbox are stimulating kids to need the next game release with their rediculous "gamer points" system, and people are buying games thinking theyre great, but theyre not, they're just second rate, games of the moment - which will be forgotten as soon as the gamer points are earned and the next titles out.

On the other hand, Sony have no excuses for what's happening to them. even up to 1 year ago, they still looked like the unconquerable Samurai of gaming. I'm completely at a lost to understand how they were able to be caught with they're trousers down, in so many ways !

What of The Elder Scrolls - Oblivion? I thoroughly enjoyed that title. I tend though to agree with your stance on Japanese titles. However, I believe the term 'Yankee Hogwash' is a bit harsh; wouldn't you agree? Afterall, most of the companies producing titles for America, are not located within the states. So, it appears to be really more of a money making racket. Game developers are going to consistantly cater to the tastes of those consumers who will generate the largest amount of revenue. Sadly, I beleive America receives a bad reputation for this, due to their lax standards on what is socially apropriate, and what is not. A good case in point are the GTA titles. IMO - Absolute rubbish... However unfortunate, the desire and pontential for intense capital is there.

Sony has never failed to underdeliver on their tall orders, and I highly doubt PS3 will be any different. Microsoft isn't trying to force some new (expensive) disk format down everyone's throats, and is doing their utmost to make development easier for developers. Not to mention they got me my GTA IV with exclusive content!

personally, i think western games lack character and intuitive design. they serve to indulge the player without exposing them to something so different it turns them away. playstation does the same at times, however it is pretty much undisputatble that it has far more thought provoking titles that actually explore the way in which a game is played.

I thought the PS2 was considerably better than the xbox. I bought both consoles and preferred the PS2. I think that the games were better probably due to the PS being around longer and the game developers being more use to the PS format. one major thing was that the PS controllers are simply a lot more user friendly. I have purchased a 360 and am impressed by the progress, although i still find the controllers too bulky. I will purchase the PS3 and to be honest can't wait.

I don't believe it will be a black and white issue as too which is the bette console. people will always have their own preferences but if sony makes a similar level of progress in this area to Microsoft then the PS3 will always have the edge for me.

As for the difference, i seen teh PS3 and it really does kick the ass of the xbox 360. The blue ray alone sums it up. First, most game developers have to get games out within 1 year. As such, the problem isn't storage on the DVD disc or creating a big enough virtual world. It's coding the engine, figuring out the gameplay, etc. I've yet to hear of a single developer complain they can't fit the game on 8GB. Will it happen eventually? Sure, probably.

But most games get sick of the same game after about 50hours of gameplay. Even if Blueray added more maps, it could certainly extend the gameplay to say 300hours (6X more storage), but who wants to play the same game for 300hours?

When I beat a game, I don't want it to take 300hours of my life.

Even with 50GB of space, most game developers will simply copy/paste the maps and slightly change them - change the layout, maybe the color-scheme. They don't have the development time to waste creating 50GB games all with uniquely designed and rendered maps. They are in it for a profit, so spending a ton more development for a $50 game doesn't make much sense to me. They still get $50 no matter what.

having purchased a Sony Viao laptop and then a sony erricson phone I found that I then had to buy sony erricson memory, hard disks ETC at twice the price of equivilent non proprietry hardward.

Sony will do anything to keep you having to pay for sony product support. I also found that after 3 years I could no longer get downloadable product drivers for my laptop and would have to pay for support if I needed it.

There s a side for every console I personally belief is the xbox has more of a controlled system the Dashboards so its called is indeed more simple yet commanding. The Ps3 is almost the same as the sony PSP which was confusing and it really looked like something that need to be studied and learned before you even knew anything about. A person turning on a Ps3 for the first time would be confused and ditured. In this arguement people all have there opinions and facts true on each system. "My first impressions of the PS3 are pretty favorable. It is very slick. The hardware itself feels very futuristic. It has sensors and not buttons. It does seem like it is more technologically advanced with sharper graphics.

I would rather get a PS3 any day, the specifications are much better on it. Their graphics may be matched, but the games on PS3 are much better. I have both the PS2 and XBox console, but i didnt get a XBox 360 as I was disappointed with the limited selection of better games. Microsoft attempted to place RPG games like Kaldera(which sucked an awful lot) on their platform.

I honestly have nothing against XBox, I love playing games like Burnout, in fact, it's one of my favourites. But if i had to choose between the PS3 and XBox 360, i'd still get the PS3 as i'm more of an RPG gamer and to me (and prob many other RPG gamers out there), the PS3 is a better avenue for it. XBox still loses out to PS3 in terms of games.

Like in all of my other responses to things like this, I simply must bring the Wii into this. Nintendo fanboys base the apparent success of their beloved toy on sales. The Wii sells better for two reasons, and two reasons only; a) it's cheaper, and b) it appeals to a wider, more child-based market.

This whole 'he took my idea' thing comes into this as well. I see people always trying to say that PS3 copied the Xbox and the Wii. I'd like to point a big 'no' at both of these statements. Firstly, Wii. This motion sensing thing is modern technology, it's not like the Wii is the only piece of machine in the world to have it. What else was Sony going to do to replace vibration anyway?

Now onto Xbox 360. People are saying that Sony copied the Xbox 360 with the Internet and graphics and what not. This statement is incorrect. As a matter of fact, Microsoft did their best to copy the PlayStation 2. Not a bad job, but that, of course, makes it a last-gen system with next-gen graphics.

Finally, I'd like to complain to that person who says PS3 sucks. You are totally out of order dissing the PS3 like that. I have addressed each of your 'concerns' below, but corrected them as necessary. Enjoy.

1. The controller is better than that of the Xbox 360 any day!

and ui hate it when people say that teh xbox has better games when they only have gears of war and halo (maybe saints row but it doesnt count coz GTA4 just topps every game)thats it! and ps3 have lot of ps3 only games out that are great which 360 users cant play.

also the 360 seems to be and incomplete system where you have to buy more things to make it better like the wirelles internet access transmitter and the plug and play charger and a hd dvd player)

and finally they have updated the ps3 software so that you can do more multitasking such as play music in the background of games etc...

so if you want the full experience get a ps3 and a 360 but if you can only get 1 get the ps3 you get more for your money (gone down to 350 pounds)

Lets be real, all the xbox fanboys (original & 360 versions) are really still bitter because neither of their consoles todate can even compare to SONY's PS2. Lets face facts, games coming out for 360 today are still coming out on PS2. How the hell are you even going to try and compare a pathetic (and redundant) overpriced, game console from M$ to a obviously superb machine (note I said machine & not console) like the PS3?

For all your M$ fanboys out there who are now disagreeing with me, streaming music from your PC through your XBOX doesnt count as a plus feature! Having a hard drive that the user has no access too also doesnt count as a plus. You can only do what good old Bill lets you (yes, little sheep...)

On a PS3, the list is endless, but lets start:

1) You can install Linux...
2) You can copy all your music to your hard drive & play directly off your PS3
3) YOU CAN REPLACE THE HARD DRIVE & UPGRADE IT YOURSELF
4) You can copy pictures & movies to your PS3
5) You can now play AVI movies on your PS3
6) You can use a USB keyboard & mouse on your PS3
7) You play Blu-Ray High def movies from your PS3
8) PS3 has true high definition output (HD)

There is absolutely no hardware in the xbox 360 that is remotely similar let alone superior to the PS3.

The Xbox is only 'popular' because it has a 1 year advantage head start. I cannot say there will be more games in the near future for PS3 than 360, but like everyone else reading this or even contemplating the pros and cons of PS3 or 360, the Playstation has a solid track record, and if the PS2 is still going strong after 7 years and still competing with M$'s 'next gen' console, how long do you think the PS3 will be around? IMO, the PS3 is the next next-gen console.

After all this, do I like SONY for their spyware fubar? No, and do not advocate it by any means (as I am a Linux user).

The question now also running through minds is what does this have to do with anything? If I was running M$, I would be subject to the plethora of virus's, adware, spyware, hacking etc etc etc as is the norm on M$ operating systems.

If you are happy with your 360, good for you, you believed the BS M$ is feeding you, if you are not a sheep following BS hype, you will see the clear & ringing obvious advantages the PS3 has over the far inferior 360.

What really hurt the PS3 in my opinion was the price. Think about this though, what does that mean for the future of gaming systems?

If buyers dont want to shell out more then $400 on a system, that certainly puts a governor on the progression of games and the sytems they run on.

It just means we will all have to wait until the hardware supporting these sytems comes way down in price and that means time.

PS3 in my opinion, as a graphics programmer is ahead of its time, but in this case that might not be a good thing.

Microsoft is a grat company, but they piss me off sometimes. They feel the need to get their hands in EVERY tech industry. I cant blame them, just be careful not to support monopolization. Microsoft is the Walmart of the tech world. But hey, they make good products!

What could help Sony is the Blue Ray option. Currently, as of me writing this, Blue Ray sales are slightly higher then HDDVD. But thats another article for another time.

The conclusion is, 360 sales are higher, 360 is more affordable. 360 graphics are easier to program. All these things are major advantages to Sony's PS3.

To put the following statements in context: I own a PS3, Wii and 360 (as well as all three of the last generation - GC,PS2, Xbox)

First, can people stop saying 'Time to face facts' and then putting something that is totally wrong or purely subjective. Also, there is no way William McCoy is a gaming graphics programmer. No way at all. He can't even spell algorithm, so I doubt he writes them. I do however, agree that the PS3 is probably the more powerful of the two consoles, but thats only from my limited knowledge of processing and cell technology - which is pretty low really. It also possibly trumps 360 on its multimedia features, particularly hard-drive related issues. I didn't know I could get a web-browser on my PS3, but if you can then thats great. Its also great that you can msn if you want on a 360. Contrary to some of the PS fanboys on here, you can put music and video onto your 360 hard-drive, but not to the degree of customisation available on the PS3. As a multimedia machine, I reckon the PS3 edges out the 360, in no small part due to the inclusion of blu-ray technology.
Also, I understand the argument that you have to pay for all the 360 add-ons (wireless, HD-DVD, rechargable controllers etc.), but in a way thats better as you can customise your console. Why should someone indirectly pay for wireless internet capacity on their PS3 when they may never use it? 360 allows a little more freedom, but if you want the complete package then there is barely room for debate over pricing.

What I don't get is why the Sony argument is 'PS3 is more powerful than 360'. As I've already mentioned, this is probably true. Slip back to 1996, and the argument was flipped. N64 was undoubtably more powerful than the greystation, but the Sony arguement was 'PS1 games are better'. Errr... changing your argument somewhat? Also, with the power of hindsight I think Goldeneye, Zelda, Mario etc. have aged a bit better than Metal Gear Solid, Tekken and Tomb Raider (amongst others, I know).

With regard to the copying debate, PS3 may not directly copy 360 at all, but Sony does have a history of copycat tactics. Rumble, analog sticks, trigger buttons, camera tracking, motion sensing, wireless controllers, splitscreen and more... such is the nature of the industry, and is the basis of progression and adoption. Copying doesn't really matter, especially if Sony can do it better than whoever they are copying.

HD capabilities are irrelevant too, as 99% of games only run at 720, not 1080 so it is pointless to 'support' 1080, although potentially PS3 has the edge on this one.

Another note to all the '360 owners'. It is SO clear that few of you actually own a 360, especially Josh. You slag of the 360 a number of times, before later stating 'I HAD A 360, BUT GOT RED RING OF DEATH' etc. Lies. Come one, everyone who owns a 360 that got RROD knows that all MS do is send you a new one. I called em up 2 years+ after I bought it, sent it off to them and after 3 weeks got brand new one for free. No problem. They all have a 3 year guarantee. Although the 3 week wait is a bit crap. Still, Sony definately wins on reliability.

Backwards compatability? I personally don't care at all (as I have PS2 and Xbox), but I can see the significance of this debate. In the UK, very few models are backwards compatible, but the 360 wont play a few of my Xbox games, which is annoying. I'll let somebody else attempt to settle this aspect, as I do not feel equipped to effectvely do so.

Online - 360 is quicker (for me, it may differ for others) and I prefer the 360 setup to the PS3's. PS3 is free too, but 360 is only £2.50/$5 a month (NOT $30 a month like someone suggested), which is fuck all really. Still, I'd say this round is a draw. The best games are COD4, GTA4, Halo 3, Skate and GOW, but I think that MGS4 will also be good online.

I think thats all the key debates, with probably Sony coming out on top. Oh, except the most important one. GAMES!
As with the aforementioned N64/PS1 debate and the SNES/Mega Drive preceding it, what is the point in all the extra things and massive potential of a console, if there are no fun games to play on it. That is why the Wii is so successful, although it would lose in every category I have outlined, it would still win on games. Admittedly, there is a load of shit on the Wii, but the reason it sells is because it aims to produce fun games.
Now, the PS3 lovers may claim to list stellar games, but ultimately there are no PS3 exclusives better than an 8/10 rating. Haze, Lair, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Drakes Fortune and Resistance FOM all getting poor/average/quite good reviews, no excellents. COD4 and GTA4 however ARE excellent and other PS3 owners should be happy that they are available. Similarly, Assassin's Creed and others do much to boost my library. 360 has a better lineup of exclusive games - Bioshock, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Gears of war, Project Gotham, Lost Planet etc. Additionally, 360 gets perks like Oblivion exusivity for a year and GTA downloadable content etc.

To be honest, although for me it is better to own a 360 for the games and the controller, PS3 is potentially a better console. Who knows what the future will hold? Will Fallout 3, Fable 2, Gran Turismo 4 or Alan Wake be any good? Basically, PS3 still has the power to overtake the 360, but there is a reason why the 360 has sold more, aside from the year headstart - game quality.

Finally any debate over the integrity of either corporation is void, as they are both ruthless and careless corporations that milk you for money whenever possible (multi-taps....grrrr). Both companies are guilty of treating their consumers like shit, so take a reality pill and stop slagging each other off for no reason other than loyalty or implying crude business practices as they are employed by Sony and Microsoft. I guess the real winner is Nintendo (the only company to properly make a profit), but in relation to this debate - for me - the 360 is CURRENTLY the better console to own.

the xbox 360 was made before the ps3 was, microsoft was focusing on making the xbox360 better than the ps2 because ps3 wasn't made yet. So, sony knew about a xbox 360 and they made their 'console' and soooner or later microsoft will release xbox 720 and who knows what it will have..people these days want to see computer type of things in a gaming console. thats what a PC is made for. you can set a pc up to a full hd 106" projector screen and surround sound and get better results than what you ever thought u could.. only true people with a decent amount of knowlege about electronics will know these things off the top of their heads.

The PS3 i own is a limited edition one so it has a lot of features that PS3's nowadays don't have anymore.

I have upgraded my ps3 HDD to a 300 GiG 7400rpm and have converted my dvd colection to divx so I can store all my movies on the ps3 for quick access. Divx really saves room on the system. I have not seen the xbox game vs ps3 games yet but i'm also no too concerned since I payed 400 dollars for a blue ray player/ media center/ lan/ sling box/ gaming console/ internet browser/ home entertainment system... thats alot of things...

When I initially looked at the specifications of the Cell (PS3) and Xenos (Xbox 360) processors, it appeared that the cell processor had a big advantage over the xenos processor if both were able to harness the maximum amount of power. After looking into more detail I have come to the conclusion that the xenos processor will probably be able to perfom better than the cell processor under almost all conditions.

Both processors are stripped down and modified versions of the IBM 970 PowerPC. Each core executes at less than 1/2 the speed of the IBM 970 at the same clock frequency due to the fact that the IBM 970 has multiple execution units and will perform out-of-order execution (parallel processing) whereas the cell and xenos processors only have a single execution unit and will perform in-order execution (sequential processing). The following link illustrates the performance of a PS3 at 3.2 GHz and a Power Mac G5 at 1.6 Ghz using the linux operating system.

Linux runs on the Power Processor Element (PPE) of the cell processor so the results should be similar to one core of the xenos processor since all three cores are the same. Both processors are clocked at 3.2 GHz.

The similarities of the two processors ends there. The xenos processor has 3 identical PPE cores where as the cell processor has only 1 PPE core and 7 SPE cores.

Cell Processor
One general purpose PPE core that is used for the OS and the game application.
512 MB total memory on 2 buses which can be accesed directly only by the PPE core. 256 MB of processor main memory and 256 MB of memory used by GPU.
512 KB L2 cache for the PPE.
32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB L1 data cache for the PPE.
7 specialized SPE cores. One is used for the OS leaving 6 for the game application.
256KB SRAM per SPE. No common memory between SPEs and SPE cannot access the PPEs main memory directly but the PPE can access the SPEs memory directly.
Communications between SPE memory or to the PPE memory is performed via the Element Interconnect Bus (EIB) by either accessing ports or via DMA.
SPEs do not have branch prediction capability.
Xenos Processor
3 General purpose PPE cores that are used for the OS and game application.
512 MB main memory that is shared by all three cores and GPU.
1 MB of L2 cache that is shared by the 3 cores (333 KB per core average).
32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB data cache for each core.
2 Hardware threads per core.
Programming the 360

The OS does not use core 0 and uses only about 3% of the power of core 1 and 3% of the power of core 2. Therefore about 98% of the processor power of all three cores are available for the game application.

Programming the 360 is fairly easy and straight forward since a large amount of shared main memory is available, a relatively large amount of shared L2 cache is available, and information can be quickly and easily passed between different threads (cores) of the application by just passing pointers.

Typically an application will initially be developed using only one thread of a core. Once the application is developed the application can then be segmented to use multiple cores and possibly multiple hardware threads of each core. The easiest seqmentation would be to place the game control plus AI code in one core and graphics rendering code in another core. As soon as the AI code completes its operation, it would queue the information for graphics rendering core and immediately start to process the next frame. The graphics rendering code will be executing code for the current frame and the AI will be executing code for the next frame simultanously.

Segmenting a program beyond that becomes more difficult. The developer would have to first determine where the bottleneck is occuring. If it was in the AI code, he would then have to determine if parallel processing can be performed on the code (ex. In a racing program, it may be possible for the main program to process the AI for 5 racing cars and another core process the AI for the other 5 racing cars on the track at the same time). If the bottleneck was in the graphics rendering code, it may be possible for part of the graphics rendering code to be done in parallel in another core.

When a program is seqmented among all three cores, one of the cores may be active 100% of the time but the other two may only be active a very small time (10%, 20%, 50%, etc.). In this case more segmentation may be required of the core that is active 100% of the time. In this case, a new hardware thread can be added to one of the less active cores to handle 2 processes at one time. Once all the available hardware threads are used and more segmentation is still required, software threads (although not as efficient as hardware threads) can then be added until that core approaches 100% usage.

Once all three cores are executing near 100%, the maximum frame rate, sophistication, and detail capabilities will have been acheived. If the AI is issueing frames faster than the GPU can process them (maximum 60 fps at 720p or 30 fps at 1080i), more detail or sophistication can be added

Programming the PS3

The PS3 is so much more difficult to program than the 360. In a sense it is designed similar to multiprocessor systems used by specialized customers such NASA Ames Research Center. The concept is based on the principle that there is a very large amount of repetive mathematical data that can be performed in a parallel or a segmented sequential fashion (ex. one core multiples two arrays of 10000 numbers and then passes the output array to another core which performs divides on individual elements in the array which will pass the array to another core which performs some other operation on the data, etc. After the first core finishes its operation, it will acquire more data and perform the same operation).

Like the 360, the application would initially be developed using the PPE core. Next you would think that the PS3 (just like the 360) would be able to segment the game control plus AI code into one core and the graphics rendering code into another core. However that is not possible! Since the total application code may be about 100 MB and the SPE only has 256KB of memory, only about 1/400 of the total code can fit in one SPE memory. Also since there isn't any branch prediction capabilities in an SPE, branching should be done as little as possible (although I believe that the complier can insert code to cause pre-fetches so there may not be a big issue with branching).

Therefore the developer has to find code that is less than 256KB (including needed data space) that will execute in parallel.

Even if code can be found that can be segmented, data between the PPE and the SPE has to be passed back and forth via DMA which very slow compared of a pointer to the data like the 360.

If we assume that enough segment code was found that could use all the 6 SPE cores assigned to the game application, now the developer would try to balance the power among the cores. Like the 360, some or all the cores may have a very low utilization. Adding more hardware threads are not possible since each core has only one hardware thread. Adding software threads probably will not work due to the memory constraint. So the only option is an overlay scheme where the PPE will transfer new code using DMA to the SPE when the last overlay finishes processing. This is very time consuming and code has to be found that does not overlap in the same time frame.

Future Generation Consoles

In a few years both Microsoft as well as Sony may want to release the next generation game console. When they do that they usually want to maintain backward compatibility with their present console (multi-core applications). You would think that they could get 3 times the processor power by using the same design but instead running the processor at 9.6 Ghz. If that could be done, there wouldn't be any problems maintaining backward compatability.

Degrading the internals of this generation game console processors was done purposely by both Microsoft and Sony as a cost saving issue. It was cheaper to increase the clock frequency and degrade the internals that it would be to have a full featured PowerPC at 40% of the current clock frequency.

However, over the last several years it has been more and more dificult to increase the clock frequency and performance has been improved primarily redesigning the internals of the processor as well as implenting dual core processors and occasionally quad core processors.

In the case of 360, that should be a fairly easy and cost effective upgrade in several years. Since the Xenos processor is a fairly standard design, Microsoft probably would be able to purchase an off the shelf 3.2 GHz IBM 970 Quad processor for a pretty reasonable price (only a dual processor currently exists at that frequency). In this case three cores should give about 2.5x the power the current Xenos processor plus an additional core for a total of over 3x the processor power. In the worst case, Microsoft could purchase an Intel based quad processor like apple did (single and dual core processors) for all its new systems (I expect that PowerPC prices got too high) and use emulation for all old game applications. The following link indicates that a single core Intel processor with the same clock frequency as a single core PowerPC executes about the same overall even though emulation is being performed by the Rosetta operating system. All new applications would then use Intel native compiliers for better performance.

If developers develop game applications using the SPEs, Sony will probably have a problem. If applications used SPEs it would be difficult to change the processor design although it may be possible (but extremely difficult) to emulate the SPEs and keep a decent level of performance. Upgrading all SPEs and the PPE to be fully featured would probably not be cost effective. Sony may decide to keep the SPEs at their current speed and capabilities and add 4 fully featured PowerPC cores. New compiliers would then probably not allow developers to use the SPEs for future development.

Conclusion

In my opinion, I have serious doubts that very many developers (except exclusive developers) will program the SPEs on the PS3. Complexity is enormous, development time is large, and potential for bugs is also great.

I suspect that Gears Of War is already using the multiprocessor capability but still only using about 50% of the total power available.

It would be hard to imagine that a PS3 game application could perform better than a 360 game application without a great deal of development time.

I also agree that very few programs are available today for a PC or Mac that use more than one processor core. The reason is twofold, the complexity and manpower to develop programs that work with either single or multiple cores as well as the lack of multi-core systems that would make the development profitable. It will be a long time before more than one or two programs will use the quad capability due to its extreme rarity.

In the case of the game consoles, the same mutli-core hardware is currently available for all customers so developers have a reason (and profit motive) to develop multi-core applications. Just like HDTV it is a chicken and egg issue. Very few multi-core applications will be developed until there are a lot of consoles available. Eventually to survive most applications that desire a high degree of sophistication and a large amount detail will have to use multi-core.

Developing any application for multi-core use is difficult. However developing a multi-core application that uses SPEs is extremely complex. Just image that the SPE does not even have more memory than the original MS-DOS system from 1981 (although some initially had 128KB but quickly most went to 256K and than 512KB and finally to the maximum 640KB). Then the constant use of DMA to transfer data to and from the SPE is very slow and complex. Finally synchronization is complex and is usually controlled by the PPE core. In comparison the Xenos processor uses common memory, has a large amount of memory per process, can use a memory queue to communicate, and can therefore be totally asynchronous.

For example on the 360, during a certain time in the program the AI process could be generating frames faster than the graphics rendering process could be processing the frames. In this case there isn't any great concern since when the graphics rendering procces finishes processing the last frame, it just deletes that information from the queue and starts processing the next frame. No synchronization is necessary. However if the graphics rendering process gets too far behind, noticeable lag could start to occur so the AI process would just temporarily suspend itself if more than an acceptable amount of frames are in the queue.

On a PS3 that is much more complex. Since data is transferred via DMA, that operation is usually initiated by the PPE and usually won't be initiated until the SPE is idle otherwise it would probably corrupt the currently used data in SPEs memory. The PPE could transfer the block of data to a different part of the SPEs memory but with the very limited memory available for the SPE that may not be feasible. Also the PPE cannot easily determine what is happening in the SPEs memory unlike the 360 where processes can aquire semaphores during critical code while the queue is being updated. I'm sure there is some safe mechanism for performing that type of operation but it is probably quite complex and was probably not well designed for an asynchronous operation.

Four years later I find there has been a new addition in the house taking the form of a nice black Xbox elite, so why the hell did I have to fork out an extra 200 pounds? As much as everyone seems to focus on memory, CPU or lack of HDD it all comes down to which has the best games.

The Xbox yes has the head start but Sony have wasted far too much time delivering, well... nothing! It seems almost all of the promises Sony made just have not come to light and when they have it's all been too little too late, take Home for instance... if it had come out a year or too earlier I think it would have made a better impact but honestly, how much chess can one person play?

The Xbox seems to have a much greater focus on the online content as can be seen by the recent collection of live games released over the summer hols, the amount of exclusive games seems to be much greater on the Xbox. As I type this I feel like Im becoming more and more of an Xbox fanboy but Im sure that anyone who own both consoles must surely feel the same... Sony yes has released some excellent exclusives but some of these have been more of a let down than anything else, MGS yes looked great but it took so long to come out that it seemed stale when it did! Im sooo looking forward to the new GT game but to be honest it's been such a long wait that it better be a bloody good game!

To wrap it all up, Im hoping that things get a better for my dusty PS3 and something good finally comes out (Killzone was not good enough!) I think the battle will rage on for some time to come so fingers crossed....

Xbox Live and Xbox360 Is boring.. When I play Ps3 I get bored Rarely... and I go somewhere that Xbox live doesn't have. Playstation Home. Partly Even when I get bored of Ps3 I go to that Then I feel like playing the same game again. Playstation home is like playing another game except it keeps you busy.

but why do you buy a gaming console?
to play good games,which ms xbox 360 has.

if you are a hardcore gamer who likes to make headshots,see some gore or like to see bones shatter against walls,or race on world greatest and biggest tracks, buy a xbox 360.

the difference between the 2 console's exclusive games is that xbox 360 games are more epic and addicting.
but sony's exclusive games are mostly only for soft gamers.

i own both consoles and i must say thay though xbox live costs $8,95 a month its much better then sony's ps3...

and at my place a xbox 360 elite costs 179,95 euro(which is like 225 dollar's)and sony's playstation 3 costs 399 - 600 euro's.

Ps3 - You're Jap-crap stuff, rpgs and stuff. Intense graphics. Frankly though FF13 is a bit of a let down, all flash and no bang. Ie not really getting the player into the game, but has nice graphics..

I don't really give a shit.. Each console is aimed at different groups.

XBox so to speak is aimed at your gun fanatics with it's online CoD and what not.
PS3 is more the artsy people who like their fantasy.
Aaaaand the Wii is for the family.. With the occasional release for the more interactive-seeking player, with titles such as Madworld and what not.

Just buy both.. they're pretty cheap..
Just that finding all the bits you need to get the xbox to work to it's 100% might cost more in total than the PS3 does.
Personally, I like the ps3 more, for the fact that I loved the ps1, with crash and ff7. Shit was so cash..
Microsoft didn't have us hooked back when the ps1 was around, because the ps2 and xbox were rivals, the ps1 is untouched.

DO U GUYS REALIZE THAT BY ARGUING ON UR COMPUTER, YOU ARE WASTING SO MUCH PRECIOUS TIME THAT COULD BE SPENT ACTUALLY USING YOUR CONSOLE, INSTEAD OF DEBATING WHY YOURS IS SO MUCH BETTER?!?!?!
