Bethesda Readies First Ever Press Conference for E3

If you're thinking about the upcoming Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) event, well, you're not alone by any stretch of the imagination. No, E3 is a little over four months out now, and that's not at all too early to wonder what will show up for the big event. Indeed, one particular point has been demonstrated, and Bethesda will be having its first ever press conference at E3. Speculation about just what will be shown is already starting to run, and of course, some very big names are coming up.

The first point many are considering is Doom. It was originally called Doom 4, but now it's just being called Doom. That's enough to raise a few hackles, but is Doom sufficient to make a press conference around? It could be a part of things, but personally, I don't see Doom being enough to carry a conference. However, it may not need to be alone; there's also BattleCry from Battlecry Studios as well as the upcoming console version of The Elder Scrolls Online, which is being renamed The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited.

There are also some clear things that aren't coming, or likely won't be coming in short enough order to make a difference in time for June. Prey 2, for example isn't even in the picture, and Machinegames has next to nothing since it's release of Wolfenstein: the New Order. A Dishonored sequel, meanwhile, had been considered, but it's as yet unconfirmed.

However, there's one critical point that's been danced around for some time: Fallout 4. Long rumored, eagerly awaited, and a point that often disappoints, it's the elephant in the room. It's been the subject of hoaxes going back to at least 2013, so the idea that this is finally the point at which the game is announced certainly isn't out of line. But then, nor was it out of line to get announced back at the VGX event, or at PAX Prime, PAX South, or anything else. There's literally no way to tell.

On the one hand, at the E3 event, the news cycle is going to be absolutely swamped with news, so any one announcement is going to be buried by pretty much the next announcement. But on the other hand, that may not hold so true for an entire press conference. After all, look at the Microsoft and Sony shows; those fairly well dominate a cycle for a good long while, and even when another comes up there's still carry-over. So a large-scale announcement featuring Doom, Dishonored 2, and Fallout 4 would pretty much blow away much of the show.

Either way, however, the big day is June 14, and we'll find out just what's coming down the pike in short order. While the winter so far has never given us so much reason to look forward to summer, this is just one more reason in an ever-growing stack of same.
