Indeed this article does paint a somewhat realistic picture of what a smart card looks like today.
The biggest hurdle so far is the excessive complication due to the requirements of the vertical markets. That's why, one can go on and on to discuss ID Card, Student Card, Transport Card, Payment Card while we shall be talking simply about Cards...
So will the inudstry sort out itself or will the smart card technology become obsolete before that. In fact related technologies have been employed in lot of other domains (ePassport, ePaper, intelligent clothing, mobile phone...)...
