Symantec - Disable pcAnywhere Now! Who the Heck Still uses it?

January 27, 2012

Symantec suspected in 2006 that its network had been breached, but when Anonymous started talking publicly about Symantec source code it confirmed their suspicions. According to Wired: The company surprised the public last week when it disclosed that hackers had obtained source code for its pcAnywhere software and other products, and that the code had likely been stolen in a six-year-old breach that Symantec had never disclosed.

Symantec said in its announcement that users should disable pcAnywhere until the company had time to update the software to ensure that hackers are unable to exploit holes they might find in the code.

Disable pcAnywhere? Disable pcAnywhere? Now I was a huge fan of pcAnywhere ... back in like 1996.

Spirit Airlines Claims Government Forcing them to Hide Taxes in Fares

January 24, 2012

Check out this email I got from Spirit Airlines discussing how our U.S. government wants to HIDE government taxes from the American people. Most transparent Administration ever! NOT! Seriously? How can we as a republic support or oppose a particular political party or candidate if we cannot see the policies they've enacted? Hiding taxes is certainly one way to avoid the ire of the American voter!

Here's the full body text of the email:
WARNING: New government regulations require us to HIDE taxes in your fares.

This is not consumer-friendly or in your best interest. It's wrong and you shouldn't stand for it.

Starting January 24, 2012, fares are distorted.

Why?
Thanks to the U.S.

Top 50 Technology Blogs

September 26, 2011

eCollegeFinder just came out with their list of the Top 50 Technology blogs. Esteemed sites such as All Things Digital, Chip Chick, DVICE, Engadget, Macworld, Network World, and yours truly, my VoIP & Gadget blog made the list.

I received an email from an eCollegeFinder representative informing me about this award. Excerpt: "Congratulations! We’ve selected TMCnet’s VoIP & Gadgets Blog as a winner of eCollegeFinder's Top 50 Technology Blogs Award! Your blog stood out amongst stiff competition and is now featured on our site as a recommended technological resource for our readers."

I am honored to have been nominated by my fans for this award and to have won it along with many websites that are part of my daily reading.

On the awards announcement page they invite readers to email them their "favorite" within the list of Top 50 Technology blogs when they state, "we hope that as you browse, you learn as much about new technology as we did while putting this list together! Click around, get your geek fix, and let us know which blog was your favorite by emailing awards@ecollegefinder.com."

Hope I get a few email votes, but I'm just happy to share company with these websites - many of which have dozens of writers, while this VoIP & Gadgets blog is written solely by me.

September 20, 2011

Plantronics is launching a new line of devices designed to help companies migrate from traditional desk phone-only usage to a unified communications (UC) infrastructure, including a new a multi-device adapter, the MDA200, as well as corded and wireless USB adapters.

The goal of these Plantronics "UC Enabler" products is to leverage your existing investment in traditional voice communications, such as desk phones, headsets and audio communication devices.  The MDA200 is a multi device switcher that instantly turns any corded or wireless USB headset into a multipoint headset. The MDA200 lets you answer, end, hold and switch between calls from any connected device with a press of a button. It supports Bluetooth and DECT wireless headsets.

The goal of the MDA200 is so that you can use your existing corporate desktop phones, headsets, and even softphone applications, while also enabling the employee to use their existing personal or corporate-issued) Bluetooth headset paired to their mobile device. This enables corporations to deploy softphones from leading UC vendors including Avaya, Cisco, IBM, and Microsoft and leverage existing audio devices.  The UC Enabler Category also includes a range of USB adapters, for both corded and wireless headsets, that are designed to turn nearly any Plantronics headset into a USB device.

The Apple Downgrade Kills HP

August 19, 2011

We all know about the S&P downgrade caused by the rating agency's view of U.S.'s debt and debt ceiling. S&P saw the writing on the wall that U.S. is on the road to insolvency and default on the debt. Well, apparently the Apple iPad tablet has had a similar downgrade affect on HP's PC, laptop, and tablet business.

magicJack Plus Review

June 30, 2011

The magicJack Plus is due out very soon, perhaps as early as next month, but I was able to get an early sneak peek at it for a review. The big new feature in the MagicJack Plus is that it sports an on-board ARM CPU, which means you can make calls without the need for the MagicJack Plus to be connected to a PC. It looks almost identical to the original magicJack USB stick, but it now has an Ethernet jack for connecting to any broadband connection, enabling PC-less VoIP calling. magicJack Plus is not the first USB stick to offer PC-less VoIP calling though - that honor belongs to competitor netTALK DUO, which I reviewed back in March. magicJack may not be first, but they're backed up by VocalTec, who has been in VoIP since the beginning, so there is a comfort level that if you choose magicJack Plus, you won't have to worry about them going out of business.

Techmeme + Memo Plugin = Blogger Heaven!

June 23, 2011

I came up with a cool recipe that takes the Movable Type Memo plugin, co-worker Vahid Hashemian's JavaScript RSS/ATOM Subscription Feed Web Widget, and Techmeme's RSS feed to display Techmeme's "Top Stories" of the day within the Movable Type CMS editor interface.

This has obvious benefits.
1) You can be blogging about something and then see a breaking news story or just an interesting story you will blog about next. I find just seeing hot stories from around the web and blogosphere within the Movable Type interface helps me keep the creative writing juices flowing.
2) You can drag-and-drop Techmeme links into the Movable Type editor. (see video demonstration below). Now I can quickly drag-and-drop a hyperlink to an important story right into Movable Type.
3) If you want to post Related Articles, you can easily just grab a few Techmeme related stories and drop them into the Movable Type editor.
4) I often get caught up during my day testing products, checking email, meetings, blogging here, phone briefings, etc., which then limits my ability to check out my Google Reader RSS feeds or visit Techmeme.

Two important VoIP standards make the list, which cannot be attributed to a single individual or company.
