Free Conferencing using Skype

June 1, 2006
Today, Skype and Vapps, a VoIP conference calling provider, will be announcing that they will be offering unlimited conference calls, with up to 500 participants, for free to Skype users.  Launching on the Highspeedconferencing.com website, this announcement follows on the heels of Skype making SkypeOut calls free to U.S. and Canadian phone numbers untlil the end of 2006.

Highspeedconferencing.com supports inbound Skype calls as well as regular PSTN callers into the conference bridge. While conference call participants using a landline or mobile phone may be subject to long-distance charges or other fees, Skype participants can join the conference free of charge. It looks like Vapps is borrowing one from Skype's playbook by giving something away for free to attract users to their conferencing solution. Of course, this is yet another nail in the coffin of paying for voice services as voice heads ever closer to being "free". Nothing wrong with that I suppose - unless your a VoIP company like Vonage looking to have a successful IPO due to strong earnings.

  1. Daniel Schultz :

The free site GizmoProject.com has a GREAT VoIP solution that has had a free conferencing feature (FreeConferenceCall.com) - allowing up to 200 people for quite sometime (over 8 months that I know of)...

Seems like Skype is just trying to keep up... I wonder when Skype will work with Asterisk!?!
