BPL, WiMAX - Will there be a third pipe?

August 8, 2005

In my opinion, DSL deregulation wouldn't be so problematic if there was a viable third pipe to the home on the horizon. While there has been much hype surrounding the development of WiMAX and broadband over powerline (BPL), the reality is that reliable versions of those technologies are years away. Indeed, mention BPL to anyone outside the FCC and you'll get people trying to control their laughter. Two problems - interference and power grid limitations - prevent BPL from being the third pipe of the immediate future. WiMAX is only slightly better off, although it too has major interference problems. WiMAX, though, has heavy hitters such as Intel backing it, so the hype will still remain.

Without one of these two technologies becoming a reality, consumers will find themselves at the short end of theInternet access stick -in the form of higher prices.
