Proxim Announces FCC Mandated Hardware Updates

Ken Brioagh and I debated whether this was news or not.  In effect, I lost so I am covering the information here.  See below for the announcement by Proxim Wireless.  To me this is like a car recall, so I count it as news.

It also has a meta message as the influence of shared spectrum rules are coming into play at the FCC.  I believe this represents a Listen Before Talk [LBT] requirement by the Commission.  This ability is behind the push by Qualcomm and Nokia toward the Multefire alliance.

Anyway for those who are Proxim customers here is where the upgrade applies.

FCC revision of Part 15 of the Commission’s Rules to Permit Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) Devices in the 5 GHz Band

Hi Carl,

This is to inform you that, effective June 1st 2016, the updated FCC Part 15.407 rules would be applicable to the entire 5 GHz band spectrum. This implies detection of new radar signature in the 5.3 and 5.4 GHz DFS bands and transition from FCC Part 15.247 (ISM rules) to FCC Part 15.407 (UNII rules) in the 5.8 GHz band, with stricter out of band emission.

Proxim Wireless equipments sold in the United States of America are affected by this rule modification and the firmware update will soon be released to comply with the new FCC Part 15.407 rules.

The impact of the rules modification is different depending on the product lines:
  • Tsunami® 10100 series:
    • Already detect the new radar signature so there is no changes for 5.3 and 5.4 GHz bands
    • Due to the stricter out of band emission, Tx power at 5.8 GHz band edge needs to be reduced with sectors antennas
  • Tsunami® 8200 series:
    • The radio chipset in use does not properly detect the new radar signature, thus 5.3 and 5.4 GHz bands are not supported anymore and removed from products sold after May 31st 2016.
    • Products already installed in the field can keep operating in both 5.3 and 5.4 GHz bands
  • Tsunami® 820 and 830 series:
    • Radio driver modification allows detecting the new radar signature, thus 5.3 and 5.4 GHz bands are still supported. New products sold after May 31st 2016 are following the new DFS rules.
    • Product already installed in the field can keep using the old DFS mechanism or switch to the new one.
  • ORiNOCO® AP-9100 and USB-9100:
    • Already complies to the new rules, no change are required
  • ORiNOCO® AP-9100R and QB-9100:
    • Already detect the new radar signature so there is no changes for 5.3 and 5.4 GHz bands
