What is TADS all about?

September 30, 2014

On November 12 and 13 TADS will happen.  TADS bills itself in the following way: “TADSummit (TADS) is focused on building an essential yet missing component of the Telecom Industry, the telecom application developer ecosystem that creates new services and customer value to address the revenue decline from the commoditization of voice and messaging.”

What is so different about TADS compared to other conferences or initiatives that relate to telecom Value-Added Services?  First of all, this is the only conference that really understands that the old way of telecom applications via “walled gardens” are gone and seeks to combine the telecom services with new applications.

Will VoLTE and the iPhone6 Finally be the Vehicle to Monetize Mobile Video?

September 23, 2014

VoLTE doesn’t just mean Voice over LTE.  It also means Video over LTE.  IMS/LTE includes support for IR.94 which describes how to make conversational video calls over LTE.  Video has been possible over 3G networks.

The Changing Definition of the Diameter Signaling Controller and Diameter Routing Agent (DRA)

September 16, 2014

Next week, I will be speaking at the Signaling Focus Day of LTE Asia.  The signaling focus day obviously will have much Diameter overtones since Diameter is the signaling protocol for LTE networks.  But LTE networks are not the only cellular networks and will not be the only cellular networks for some time. Interoperability and Interworking with GSM and 3G networks will be critical as will interworking with other mobile networks such as Wi-Fi networks.

Practical and Smart IMS

September 9, 2014

Last week, I wrote about the drivers behind the recent increase in IP multimedia system (IMS) deployments. As communication service providers (CSPs) begin to embrace IMS, it’s important to remember that co-existence and phasing is vital in many of the deployments where VoLTE and IMS networks meet. As things stand, IP-based next-gen networks (NGNs) and circuit-switched networks not only continue to co-exist, but are also poised to do so for many years to come. This requires interworking between these different network architectures.

What's Driving IMS Today?

September 2, 2014

IP multimedia system (IMS) network architecture has been around for a long time.  While it was originally conceived for mobile IP networks, it first gained acceptance in wireline IP networks, such as cable networks. To date, acceptance has been spotty in the mobile arena, but that’s starting to change. Why now?
