FCC Is Preparing Major New Cable TV Regulations
The U.S. FCC is planning to release new regulations that should open up U.S. cable tv to more diverse programming.
“The finding will provide the commission with additional authority to assure that there is opportunity for additional voices,” FCC Chair Kevin Martin tells The New York Times. “It is important that we continue to do all we can to make sure that consumers have more opportunities in terms of their programming and that people who have access to the platform assure there are diverse voices.”
Arguably the most significant new rules would prohibit further growth by acquisition on the part of the U.S. two largest cable companies, Comcast and Time Warner Cable.
As part of this initiative, the FCC is expected to claim new regulatory authority over the cable industry as interpreted via the Cable Communications Act of 1984.
Consumer groups praised the measure while to no one's surprise, the cable tv industry lambasted it.
I am betting that if these regulations come to pass, the cable tv industry will seek its day in court.
