Judge Denies Viacom's $1 Billion Infringement Claim Against Google
US District Court Judge Louis Stanton denied Viacom's claim for punitive damages in its $1 billion copyright infringement case against YouTube and its parent, Google.
The amount of the claim had been based on a statutory penalty of $750 to $30,000 for copyright infringement violation, with an option for a $150,000 claim for a "willful violation."
No word yet from Viacom on whether or not they plan an appeal.
My prediction: an out-of-court settlement for much, much less, followed by some sort of licensing agreement.
