Schumer Favors Stronger Encryption for No-Swipe Credit Cards

December 5, 2006

Even fans of U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York) say that the Senator never met a press conference he didn't like.

But now, as his party is less than 30 days of their ascendancy to the majority in the Senate, Schumer's pronouncements of outrage can be seen as a prelude to introduction of statutes that might mirror the concerns he expresses in press conferences.

One example of this is Schumer's news conference yesterday about no-swipe credit cards.

Only out about a year, these are cards that when used at retail, require only a radio frequency identification signal to initiate the authorization process, not a mechanical swipe.

"All you need to be is within a couple of feet of the customer," said Schumer, who held his conference on a busy Manhattan street presumably full of credit card-using holiday shoppers. "You might as well put your credit card on a big sign on your back."

Banks deny that these types of credit cards are insecure. But Schumer wouldn't hear of it.

Schumer said he favors regulations that would hold these cards to a higher encryption standard.
