Apple iPod touch

Apple iPod itouch
Apple unveiled the iPod touch, essentially a "phoneless" iPhone featuring all that glorious iPhone multi-touch UI functionality but without the AT&T contract.smile  The iPod touch features WiFi wireless connectivity which not only lets you browse the web using its built-in Safari browser, but you can also purchase iTunes on-the-go. And yep, you guessed it, just like the Apple iPhone you can play YouTube videos on the first-ever Wi-Fi iPod. Alas, still no FM tuner damn it!

The iPod touch measures just 8mm wide and has a 3.5 inch widescreen touchscreen display. If fact, the touchscreen features the same multi-touch functionality as the Apple iPhone. Oh glory be! Now with multi-touch functionality you can swipe your finger through your album covers and quickly find the song you're looking for. Apple also announced a deal with Starbucks so when you enter a Starbucks with your iPod touch and you hear the overheard music playing in the Starbucks store, you will see a Starbucks button giving you the option to purchase the music you are hearing.

The iPod touch offers a whopping 22 hours of audio playback or 5 hours of video playback.

The iPod touch will be available in two configurations – an 8GB model for $299, and a 16GB for $399.

Update: (also made a separate post to expound on VoIP/Skype on the iPod touch)
I forgot to mention that since the Apple iPod touch supports the same Safari browser as the iPhone that you can also run AJAX applications. Thus, you can even run a VoIP application such as Skype on the Apple iPod touch using SoonR or IM+ for Skype. Of course, the iPod touch doesn't have a microphone so you can't have 2-way voice. Further, these two Skype for iPhone solutions require a SkypeOut phone call to an actual phone number, i.e. an iPhone's phone number. Unfortunately, the iPod touch doesn't have an inbound phone number. Until a native AJAX VoIP application comes out, you won't be making VoIP calls from the iPod touch. That certainly would be a cool app, especially if it supports SIP to terminate to any SIP service provider. Of course, you will be able to view your Skype buddies' presence info and even initiate instant messaging sessions with them. Hmm, texting IMs from your iPod. Seems so strange.

Finally, I can buy the iPod Touch. Can Skype now give a full fledged solution for this? I would not need to go to any Phone company then. No need to buy the iPhone! I have been waiting for this - that is why I did not buy the iPhone. I was told that to use the iPhone (even though one may not want to use the phone feature) - it has to be activated with AT&T. Thank God, I do not need to change carriers - in fact with iPod Touch I do not need carriers. Why in USA we cannot have a choice to buy phones separately and decide on phone carriers separately. Further, iPod Touch is better than iPhone as it has 16GB (8GB more)!
Why I should answer every call - let it go to voice - I can answer when I am near a hotspot - Starbucks / Coffee Bean - more bucks to you!

The iPod touch is going to be awesome, I can't wait to get mine (comes out a little later in Canada, Oct 12th, I think).

I really didn't want an iPhone, as I barely use the phone I have, but I wanted the touch screen features. My prayers have been answered! Looking forward to it, Apple.

Older WiFi technologies such as 802.11a/b are inferior to the new 802.11n (& MIMO) standards that are designed to boost signal strength without increasing power consumption. Most modern CMOS chips with basic WLAN features draw about 10 microamps of current in sleep mode and 0.6 milliamps while in power save mode while maintaining association to an access point. These chips are usually 50 or 60 square milliameters packaged in a compact low profile ball grid array (LFBGA) for easy integration into handheld devices. They can be integrated with Bluetooth radios as well and engineers have got the radio signals to play nicely together.

The challenge with the iPod Touch will be the loss in the excellent battery life the device has when WiFi is used. With WiFi turned off, you can get nearly 7 hours of video battery life. If you are streaming video, Skyping or downloading, while playing music, you've got lots of heat and processing power drawing more current, A/D conversions and grabbing packets out of the air. I'd expect to see a 30% or 40% reduction in rated battery life under these conditions. We've not even considered any overhead associated with security such as WPA2 or advanced authentication to access fee-based networks. [http://lopezunwired.com]

Any word on an AJAX app for this yet? I know the script kiddies are usually pretty quick to get stuff up and going, and I've already heard of some people hacking the iPod touch.

I would think that since the iPod Touch has Wi-Fi, you could somehow track the IP address it is using if it gets stolen. Mine got stolen and I've been trying to find some way to track it, of course there's nothing. If any of you reading this have ever stolen an iPod, F-CK YOU.
