FCC Commissioners Win Concessions From AT&T: Rapid BellSouth Merger Approval Likely

December 28, 2006

After a week of negotiations with attorneys for the two Democratic Commissioners of the FCC,AT&T filed a letter of commitment with the agency Thursday night that included a promise that an AT&T with BellSouth under its merged wing would observe "network neutrality" principles, provide affordable stand-alone DSL line service and also divest some wireless spectrum.

Although no further FCC meetings are scheduled this year, approval for mergers can be granted via electronic vote among all the Commissioners. This could happen as early as Friday.

Gene Kimmelman, vice president of federal and international affairs for Consumers Union, who has had serius reservations about the $85 billion AT&T-BellSouth deal, said this evening that AT&T's new concessions are "an enormous improvement from where we were a month ago."
