AT&T DSL Fails Out West

July 29, 2005

Because this blogger takes a secret pleasure in pointing out powerful people’s and entities’ faults, failures and otherwise shortcomings altogether, I offer this fulfilling news —

AT&T Corp.’s DSL Internet service failed in five states last night. Due to incremental weather? No.Due to a vindictive technician? No. Possibly due to a curiously exploratory squirrel with a hunger for wiring? ... Maybe ... ? ...No.

Reported by Associated Press, subscribers in five Western states lost their connections for several hours after the telecommunications company experienced a problem with equipment that routes data over its network. Apparently, the problem stemmed from a problematic router that’s been identified and was being repaired.

The service went down about 6 a.m. PDT, and about 50 percent of customers had their servicerestored by later the same evening, company spokesman Andy Backover told AP. But he did not know when all affected customers would be restored.

AT&T confirmed homes and businesses in California and four other Western states were affected, but it would not provide the total number of subscribers who lost service, nor would it name the other states.

Backover said AT&T received more than 2,000 reports of trouble.

The outage affected only customers of DSL service; it did not have any consequence on other portions of the network for T1 service and other Internet backbone functions that AT&T maintains.
