In (partial) praise of IPaq 6315

Okay I got to use the iPaq 6315 for about a week and have some impressions. I think if you are a PC user, and have a user-friendly tech-support department, then this is a good device for you to carry on day trips. I got to configure and use it with my T-Mobile service within minutes, since most of the settings come preloaded into the device. The software collection that is bundled with this device will meet most of your needs. The new device is a quad-band global communicator, and can roam seamlessly from one corner of the world to the other. It is also quite easy to connect with the T-Mobile hotspots. I tried to connect with a bluetooth headset from Plantronics, with success in less than ten minutes. The thumb board provided with the device is good enough for answering emails and sending quick SMS messages. I installed the XTen softphone on the device, and boom I was making VoIP calls using my Vonage account. more...

Qualcomm Conducts VoAirplane Test

August 23, 2004 1:15 PM | 1 Comment

Taken from GekoNews On July 15, Qualcomm conducted a wireless VoIP test on an American Airlines commercial airplane, enabling passengers with commercially available CDMA mobile phones to place and receive calls and text messages in-flight. The technology employed Qualcomm's 3G picocell network and UTStarcom's Moving Media 2000 softswitch to support a VoIP connection between an in-cabin CDMA cellular base station and an air-to -ground Globalstar satellite link. Boeing conducted a similar VoAirplane test last month, supporting in-flight PC to phone connectivity on a Lufthansa aircraft using Xten's softphone.

First steps in VoIP

by Nathan Torkington Nathan Torkington is an editor, content planner for the O'Reilly Open Source Convention, co-chair of the O'Reilly Bioinformatics Conference, and eager awaiter of the Mac OS X Conference. Rael and I are about to go to London, and thence to Amsterdam for Euro Foo. Rael's been looking at Skype as a cheap way to stay in touch with our families in the US, but we're both running Mac households and Skype doesn't offer a Mac port. So I've been looking at X-Lite, a "softphone", which does have a Mac port. Both X-Lite and Skype have PocketPC ports, which makes Rael happy--he loves his iPaq. I'm still unclear on the whole VoIP world (anyone want to write us a small consumer VoIP intro? I'd buy it!) but it appears to break down something like this: hardware phones, software phones, and the SIP services that connect phones together are all different. So I could buy a Vonage hardware phone, run X-Lite as a software phone, and get service from a company I've never heard of. Which is pretty much what I did. more...
