Sun adds XMPP to IM client

March 31, 2005 11:16 AM | 0 Comments

I am glad to hear Dan is on the ball, SIMPLE is the future. ---- Dan Graves, Sun group product manager for collaboration products, downplayed that contention and said the decision to adopt XMPP was made primarily from a features standpoint and in no way represents a decision to favor one IM protocol over the other. Sun, he said, plans to address SIMPLE in the future. more..

Yahoo!'s Phising attacks a couple of days ago and now Trillian's age-old buffering issues point to more secure IM solutions. TLS, S/MIME and SIP Certs are promising to address these issues from an open standards perspective. I am sure there will be some attention paid to this at SIPit to be held in in Banff this year. more..

ineen seems to be doing well in the early stages of the Beta trials and I have been reading some bloggings so I thought I would provide some info on what's around the corner. Incidentally, the word "ineen" essentially means together in Dutch. A Pocket PC version [no video] will be available shortly, I expect it will be available in the next few weeks. A Linux version will be available sometime this year I hope, not sure when. Users will be able to select their own User ID, e.g. elagerway instead of being allocated an ineen number. I am pushing for this to be changed in the coming weeks. File transfer and Security via TLS and S/MIME will follow some time near the end of the 3rd quarter '05. At the same time we are working on a more IM-centric interface so users can open up the advanced features when desired providing a better experience for those less technically inclined. Try the ineen wish list if you want to see something added or changed in ineen.

The FCC action came after VoIP providers Vonage and Nuvio complained to the agency broadband providers are blocking or degrading their Internet telephony services. In public comments, neither Vonage nor Nuvio named the providers blocking their traffic. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today fined a North Carolina telecom holding company $15,000 for blocking Voice over IP (define) calls to their customers. In addition to the fine, Madison River Communications of Mebane, N.C., agreed to refrain from blocking VoIP traffic and to put measures into place to ensure that such blocking won't happen again. more...

Costa Rica's state-owned telecommunications monopoly is lobbying to criminalise internet telephony. The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) is pushing for stringent controls over VoIP that at their most draconian could make internet telephony a crime, Costa Rican daily La NaciĆ³n reports. According to the paper, 20 per cent of Costa Rica international calls are made using VoIP rather than over conventional phone circuits. ICE argues that VoIP ought to be treated as a substitute telephone service and regulated more tightly than data services. It reckons tough rules against "unlicensed operators", including criminal sanctions if necessary, are needed. more...
