Today, Counterpath launched a hosted service that enables wireline operators to deliver voice and SMS to any mobile phone on any mobile network. Their NCG Exchange product gives telcos, cable operators, hosted VoIP providers, Internet Telephony service providers, CLECs and other Wireline Operators with a cost-effective solution for enabling Over-the-Top, Fixed-Mobile Services. One of the features includes Voice Call Continuity (VCC), which Counterpath's Todd Carothers demonstrated to me at ITEXPO

With NCG Exchange, wireline operators can immediately provide their enterprise, SMB and SOHO customers with mobile VoIP and messaging services that are delivered over-the-top (OTT) of mobile networks, regardless of which carrier the customer uses.

Hosted and provisioned by CounterPath, NCG Exchange services work with any mobile handset – including smartphones and feature phones – without the requirement to install any software on the mobile handset. To further enhance the NCG Exchange service, operators can choose to deploy CounterPath’s Bria iPhone Edition or Bria Android Edition softphones, giving their customers the additional options of communicating over Wi-Fi and 3G/4G IP alongside the standard mobile voice and SMS channels. Operators can also leverage CounterPath’s Bria desktop/laptop PC or Mac softphones, allowing their customers to use their communications services seamlessly across both desktop softphones and mobile phones.

According to Counterpath, "NCG Exchange’s highly flexible, network- and device-agnostic architecture means a wireline operator’s customers now can put a single phone number on their business cards with the confidence that they can always communicate with a single number by voice, IM and SMS – an ability that goes beyond rudimentary find-me/follow-me services. rotary-phone-voip.jpg
Now normally you wouldn't want to use a corded phone to make VoIP calls and be chained to a 6 foot corded talk distance. That is unless of course you want to feel the nostalgia of the early 1980s (and earlier) by using a rotary corded phone to make VoIP calls. Tyler Brainerd found an old Model 500 rotary phone at Goodwill, which he then turned into a handset for his computer.

He explained, "I am a rather heavy google voice user, and I was thrilled when google implemented calling through gmail, except for one thing. I use a desktop, which has only a token crap webcam, and not a decent microphone at all. Thus, I could rarely make use of a fantastic feature of being able to call without using my phone at all, and simply using a browser window in my regular work flow. Continue Reading...

Fix for Skype Sign In Problem

May 26, 2011 8:28 AM
I logged onto my computer this morning to be greeted with a message saying "Skype has stopped working", i.e.:
skype-stopped-working.jpg

Skype has never crashed on me. Well, not in the last 4 years or so I should say. I quickly learned there was a widespread outage with users unable to logon.

[Update: I'm basing my initial word choice 'widespread' based on Twitter users' tweets and the fact that my account got hit out of the millions of Skype users. A Skype spokesperson said it was not a widespread problem. It may or may not be as widespread as I initially reported, hence this update.]

Sure enough when I tried to re-launch Skype, nothing happened. Continue Reading...
skype-for-asterisk-killed.jpg
In case you hadn't heard, Skype has decided to not renew the agreement for Digium's Skype for Asterisk, effectively killing Skype for Asterisk.

Skype for Asterisk will not be available for sale or activation after July 26, 2011.

Skype for Asterisk was developed by Digium in cooperation with Skype. It includes proprietary software from Skype that allows Asterisk to join the Skype network as a native client. Skype has decided not to renew the agreement that permits us to package this proprietary software. Therefore Skype for Asterisk sales and activations will cease on July 26, 2011.

This change should not affect any existing users of Skype for Asterisk. Representatives of Skype have assured us that they will continue to support and maintain the Skype for Asterisk software for a period of two years thereafter, as specified in the agreement with Digium.

email-folders-suck.jpgStop organizing your emails into FOLDERS right now! Yes, I'm talking to you neurotic-email-folder-organizing-bastards! You've been doing it all wrong!

According to Gizmodo, "A recent study from IBM research confirms a belief I've maintained for years. Instead of organizing your inbox, it's more efficient (not to mention EASIER), to leave your email in a state of chaos, and just use search to find what you need." The study reads in part, "We carried out a field study of 345 long-term users who conducted over 85,000 refinding actions. Our data support opportunistic access. People who create complex folders indeed rely on these for retrieval, but these preparatory behaviors are inefficient and do not improve retrieval success. In contrast, both search and threading promote more effective finding."

Yeah, that's right you OCD, anally-retentive, must keep Inbox email count at 0 by dragging emails into folders - you are less efficient. All that organizing time is for naught. Continue Reading...

Tomorrow, CounterPath Corporation will announce their ITSP Partner Program for mobile softphones. Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs) will now be able to certify their service with CounterPath's Bria iPhone Edition Softphone and an added benefit is simplified provisioning for customers. (i.e. auto-provisioning)

The launch of CounterPath's online certification program for ITSPs will enable ITSPs to certify their service with CounterPath's mobile softphone, Bria iPhone Edition, as well as provide a pre-provisioned service option within the softphone client.

Simply by participating in the ITSP Partner Program, ITSPs can provide their customers with a softphone option that is easy to activate and use.

“Joining CounterPath's ITSP Partner Program and certifying our OnSIP Hosted PBX service with Bria iPhone Edition was an obvious choice for us," said Robert Wolpov, President and Founder of Junction Networks. "OnSIP was specifically designed to provide small and medium-size businesses with access to enterprise-grade PBX systems. Continue Reading...

Disney World Vacation Trip Report

I was in Disney World for the last 8 days and just returned yesterday. While I was away I used a webcam, Yet Another Webcam software (YAWCAM), motion detection, Dropbox, and my iPhone to keep an eye on my house. But I'll post my remote surveillance recipe at a later date. I have to research and write up the TMC Labs Innovation Awards for Internet Telephony Magazine.

For now here are some highlights from our trip to Orlando, Florida:
We really enjoyed the Voyage of the Little Mermaid at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (formerly Disney MGM Studios). It’s a fantastic show with puppets, live actors, a projection screen, and superb singing. Continue Reading...

Nothing is better than a chocolatey Mickey Bar while strolling through a Disney World park on a hot day. So I go to buy one and see this ridiculous disclaimer: "Caution is advised. Items are hard frozen". Obviously, Disney is concerned someone might chomp into one of these ice cream items and chip a tooth resulting in a lawsuit. Really? Has it come to this? We have to put warnings for hard ice cream? Damned if something is too hot (see McDonald's infamous coffee lawsuit) and damned if something is too cold. Hence reason #9376 why we hate lawyers. See pic below I took at EPCOT:

blue-jeans-network.jpgBlue Jeans Network has been quietly developing a new cloud-based video conferencing and collaboration service that bridges H.323 and SIP end-points, PSTN — and even Skype, with the goal of allowing users to connect everything from high-end video telepresence systems like Tandberg/Cisco and Lifesize to web cams running Skype to desktop IP videophones from Polycom, Grandstream, Cisco, and others. This solves a major problem with video conferencing and telepresence since interoperability, while it has improved, still doesn't take into account legacy H.323 end-points or users that only have inexpensive webcams. Blue Jeans Network plans to support Google and Microsoft Lync as well. Their cloud-based service handles the transcoding of audio and video codecs as well as manages the meeting IDs, PINs, etc. The web portal also grants moderators the ability to mute individual participants, all participants, as well as turn off their video.

The product is currently in beta, but sound so cool I decided I had to take it for a spin. Continue Reading...
raspberry-pi-usb-computer.jpg
Imagine being able to carry a PC on your keychain, well imagine no more! David Braben a game developer invented a skeletal computer on a USB stick that runs Linux (Ubuntu), and gets you connected to the Internet. This tiny USB stick PC sports a HDMI port on one end and a USB port on the other.  It comes equipped with a decent 700 MHz ARM 11 processor, 128 MB of RAM, a USB port, support 1080p video and the ability to add a webcam or WiFi module. All this for $25. Definitely could be a game-changer, especially in the developing world, i.e. One Laptop Per Child.

Now if you think carrying a PC on your keychain is cool, imagine carrying a big-iron IP-PBX on your keychain. Continue Reading...

Facebook and Google Eye Skype

May 4, 2011 8:36 PM
google-logo.jpg

I recently griped about the lack of native VoIP on the popular Facebook website. It's such an obvious lacking feature, that one has to go "hmmm... Why don't they have VoIP?" Surely, they must be secretly developing VoIP. Well, what if Facebook has been in secret negotiations to leverage Skype as the primary VoIP vehicle on the Facebook platform? Well check out this fascinating Reuters article where both Facebook and Google are eying Skype:

Facebook and Google Inc are separately considering a tie-up with Skype after the web video conferencing service delayed its initial public offering, two sources with direct knowledge of the discussions told Reuters .

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has been involved in internal discussions about buying Skype, according to one of the sources. Another source said Facebook had reached out to the Luxembourg-based company about forming a joint venture.

Google has also held early talks for a joint venture with Skype, the second source said.

A Skype deal could be valued at $3 billion to $4 billion, the first source said.

Viber for Android Beta Launches

May 4, 2011 3:25 PM
viber-android.jpg
Viber today announced Viber, a mobile VoIP app was available for the Android. Viber lets users make free phone calls and send free text messages with their mobile phone. I've written about Viber in the past, but didn't initially see the convenience factor of using a person's regular phone number to dial someone using Viber. That is, the Viber dialer would automatically detect if the other person is also a Viber user to route the call. This probably explains why they are up to 10M installs. Continue Reading...
If you use Kaspersky with Microsoft Lync (or OCS 2007), you may be interested to know that Kaspersky can kill Lync's connectivity. Specifically, Kapersky Internet Security's network traffic monitor, called Web Protection in some versions blocks the network traffic. It can kill remote desktop sharing sessions (Microsoft Live Meeting sessions) within OCS/Lync, as well as audio/VoIP, and video. Curse you anti-virus! The solution is to disable Kaspersky from scanning communicator.exe (%Program Files%\Microsoft Lync\communicator.exe), essentially making it a trusted application.

OCS Guy also encountered this issue with Microsoft Office Live Meeting, and he too explains the problem and resolution, which was to disable scanning of Microsoft Office Live Meeting's traffic: Continue Reading...
bababoo-iphone-app.jpg
Bababoo is a new iPhone mobile VoIP app, similar to Viber which aims to simplify dialing while saving on costs. Bababoo user-to-user calls are free. It automatically figures out whether WiFi, 3G (data), or your mobile carrier is the best way to connect. Non-Bababoo calls are 16 cents/minute. If Bababoo cannot connect you through WiFi or 3G (data) then Bababoo transfers the call to your carrier who will charge $1.69/minute. Continue Reading...
