A couple of data center acquisitions happened (and some other notes). Shaw Communications, a Canadian cableco, came down to acquire the data center company, ViaWest, for about $1.2 Billion from the private equity owners. [pr]

The other move: Alpheus bought StratITsphere's retail datacenter business.

The Whirl Factor

"If the industry as a whole knew how awesome your product was--if they really understood all the differentiating features and the benefits of using it--would they still get behind it? Would sales people actively sell it? Would customers be lining up to buy it?"

Are You Getting Rejected By Cable?

I hear a lot of stories about cable: (1) About a one-third order drop out rate due to no facilities: (2) Intensive paperwork for orders and quotes; and (3) clean orders are rare, which causes rejections that result in delays and extra time. Oh, and even worse:

A change in Comcast's process is making clean paperwork even more important. Effective immediately, Comcast's direct team may now take over any order that is rejected for more than four business days; causing partners to lose the order.

Basic Math on Sales Commissions

Yesterday when I wrote about what the channel is selling, it was mainly bigger deals. Obviously, there are many more transactions taking place.

When I work with VoIP providers, the thing that always gets said is that it is just as much work to get 150 seats as it is to get a 15 seat sale. Think about that.

More Big M&A Deals Announced

TWC is being bought by Comcast - with Charter taking some pieces of that $45 Billion deal. This would make Comcast - already the biggest ISP and TV provider - even bigger and more powerful. While TWC is not really a competitor to Comcast (in fact, the cable guys collude like no other business sector), it would concentrate a lot of power into one entity that also owns a lot of content under its NBC-Universal.

Before this deal was announced, FCC Chair Wheeler told Softbank that they would not look friendly to a T-Mobile acquisition by Sprint.

M&A Merger Rumors Abound

Sprint is getting set to offer a bid to buy T-Mobile, which is funny since the FCC already told Softbank Sprint that they would say no. But on the heals of the Comcast-TWC deal (that now involves Charter getting some TWC leftovers), Sprint thinks that it will be okay.

Then there is the AT&T buying DirecTV rumor. Never hear the rumor about DISH being bought, huh?

Things That May Interest You

There are a bunch of things that I want to comment on but just don't have the time. Yet they may be of interest to you. I did get to comment on the FCC's net neutrality ruling and the Cbeyond-Birch merger.

For one thing, I hope that the CBEY-Birch deal doesn't become the Fairpoint-VZ deal.

Tech Data and Ingram Micro have partnerships to sell network services. Ingram Micro has a deal with CenturyLink and TW Cable. Tech Data has deals with XO and Microcorp (a master agency).

I want to know how the TWC-Ingram deal works.

The Fight Between Verizon and Netflix

It seems to be all over the news (like here) that Verizon (and Comcast) aren't happy with Netflix. Netflix has too many users and eats up too much bandwidth.

Users buy bigger pipes and FiOS just to get faster (they think better) Internet access to enjoy Netflix or Hulu without buffering. Surprise!
