It's the Content Stupid!

January 20, 2011

At a networking event on Monday night in Tampa, I ran into an SEO guy, who proceeded to explain that Google search results (SERPs) would be all paid soon. He didn't know the difference between an SEO strategy and managing a PPC (pay-per-click) campaign. (The Cranky Bastards discuss this on this week's podcast - and I will be discussing SEO and Lead Gen with TMC's Anthony Graffeo Friday).

I tried to explain that organic SEO will always work - meaning content like crack will beat any paid campaign.

If Only the Presenters Improved

November 10, 2010

I organize a few events. I present at a few conferences. And I attend about 15 each year. I rarely sit through a whole presentation. Why?

Day 1 Observations from Phoenix

October 26, 2010

I'm at the Broadsoft Connections 2010 user conference in Phoenix. The theme is Ignite Passion (for Hosted UC). These are some of my notes:

Broadsoft is pushing not just Hosted PBX but services they are calling CAAS (Communications-as-a-Service).

Startup Camp Announces Keynote

August 25, 2010

Last ITEXPO, Larry Lisser ran his first Startup Camp for Communications companies. It was a unique idea for our industry - and especially for an industry conference. Thomas Howe and Andy Abramson were two of the 4 judges who gave quality feedback to the 4 presenting companies.

This time round, Larry has brought in another excellent keynote: Jeff Bonforte

GROWCO Tidbits

March 17, 2010

So I was at INC magazine's GROWCO conference this week. I wasn't too thrilled with the majority of the content - speakers were off-topic or just blowhards. But here are a bunch of ideas:

"Fear is necessary," said George Foreman. It was reiterated by many others because fear means that you are uncomfortable and growth only happens when you are uncomfortable.

Unsubscribe and Permission

November 17, 2009

Seth Godin wrote Permission Marketing in 1999. Ten years later, most media companies don't understand the concept still. As Seth explains in the book and in his blog numerous times, when I give you my email address, it is a trust issue. I trust that you will not spam me; inundate me with off-topic email; and most importantly not sell my email address to third parties -- even if they are your partners.

All too often, when I sign up for an event, I get inundated with email from the vendors of the event.

Off to the Phoenician

October 26, 2009

I am at the Broadsoft Connections event with 775 other folks piled into the Phoenician. Gorgeous hotel set at the foot of the mountains in Phoenix. Staff is nice and the suite is sweet.

I'm speaking tomorrow on a panel with Bell Canada, RoutIT, and KPN.
