Agent and Reseller M&A

October 1, 2014

GTT Communications just acquired UNSi for $40 million. GTT is an interesting company. Interesting in how they put makeup on. There are numerous descriptions of the company:

This from Reuters: "GTT Communications, Inc., formerly Global Telecom & Technology, Inc., is a global network integrator providing a portfolio of Wide-Area Network (WAN), dedicated Internet access and managed data services.

Two Sides of the Street

September 10, 2014

In the past 18 months, I have seen a lot of carrier channel personnel make their way into desks at master agencies. (For example, this release.) It makes me think about quite a few things, but I am only going to touch on 2.

One, master agencies are building up for scale. There are positions for carrier folks there now, because some of these agencies have gotten so big.

The Expo News Update

September 9, 2014

Datapipe, a global managed IT provider, acquired Layered Tech to add to its US federal government business. Layered Tech adds security and compliance to Datapipe's managed cloud service. It is not unusual to pick off a specialty shop since developing the service and hiring the talent is an uphill battle today.

tw telecom says that the new CIO of the combined Level3/twt will be twt's own Harold Teets.

The Telecom INC5000

August 21, 2014

The 2014 INC5000 list is out - with 134 companies in telecom (including clients).

VoIP

Callis (now owned by C Spire) ($11M), Telesphere ($32M), Simple Signal ($11M), VoIP Innovations ($10M), Star2Star ($33M), iCore Networks ($46M, VoIP white label), Phone.com ($7.6M, #2857)

There are quite a few inter-connects, VARs, telecom agencies and several wireless consultancies.

Some Tampa Bay Telecom Tidbits

August 18, 2014

Highwire Telecom in Florida had a re-org and a few people were let go. Highwire is a TEM and auditing firm here in Tampa, Florida.

Bright House is chasing Enterprise with its fiber and Hosted PBX service (powered by their Telovations acquisition). BHN is also involved in the local start-up scene in Tampa Bay.

Many Moves

July 15, 2014

Softbank is ready to announce that it is merging with T-Mobile. It seems that Softbank CEO, which owns most of Sprint, went around the FCC by buying the German parent company. CP is reporting that "SoftBank, Sprint's majority owner, has reportedly reached a "basic agreement" to buy T-Mobile USA's counterpart, Deutsche Telekom."

Integra made its second purchase in 2014 by grabbing WCI.

TBI Adds Voxox, MicroCorp Adds Alteva

June 20, 2014

I have written before about how crowded the Hosted Voice sector is. Apparently, that was a signal for master agencies to add more VoIP players.

Voxox signed up with TBI, who recently signed 8x8 to an extensive portfolio of service providers with VoIP offerings - like West IP, Cbeyond, CenturyLink and XO. I'm not sure how many VoIP players signed with TBI, but my guess would be 20.

Vendor Buys Its Platinum Partner

June 9, 2014

"Vertical Communications, a provider of business communications software, announced that it has merged with Fulton Communications, a national systems integrator of voice, data and video communications technologies and one of the Inc. 5000 "fastest growing companies in North America."" Fulton is a Vertical Diamond Partner, who has sold more Vertical solutions over the past two years than any other channel partner."

"The new combined company will offer business customers vendor-direct communications technology solutions, including cloud and premise-based enterprise telephony, unified communications, and vertical-market voice applications, as well as a local presence for direct sales, support and professional services in major markets across the United States." [press release]

One Master Agent thought this was notable since the software company is looking for more direct sales (rather than rely on the channel). Many of the Master Agencies are in fact running a direct sales force in the background behind their prominent indirect sales model.

New President and CEO at Microcorp

May 29, 2014

On the heels of yesterday's email about buying up master agency bases, Microcorp announced today that Brad Miehl, founder of MicroCorp, will ne replaced as President by Microcorp's current Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Phil Keenan, a 28-year industry veteran.

Karin Fields will take over reigns as both COO and CEO.

Big shift to one of the largest and older master agencies who, according to the email yesterday, is looking to grow through acquisition of other agencies.

The Master Agencies seem to be at the transition stage if you look at the number of management changes that have taken place in the last couple of years.
