How Do You Make it Rain in the Cloud?

October 10, 2011

Here at Microcorp's One-on-One event, I moderated a panel this morning about various cloud services with Level3 (CDN), Cbeyond (Virtual Servers), Intercall (Microsoft 365/Linc), EarthLink (Security), and PAETEC (Visual Messaging). It's an eclectic mix, but that should tell you that there are many ways to leverage this thing called CLOUD to make money.

The Cloud is really a value for IT services. It's about leveraging the technology and the technical skill set of another company in order to let the business focus on their own finctionality, instead of the tech that might help the business operate.

The move to the Cloud by carriers is due to the lack of margin growth in the primary business of access. It's moving up the OSI stack from Layer 1 (wireless, copper, fiber) to Layer 3 (Internet) to Layer 7 (Apps).

Data Centers Make the Big Time

September 27, 2011

When USA Today starts talking about data centers, the sector has hit the big time. The USA today ran a piece about the secret rooms that run the Internet. You'd think they were talking about the NSA rooms that read every single piece of email.

QTS Atlanta Metro Data Center is the second largest data center in the world with 990,000 square feet of total space (of which 300k sf is raised floor space) and its own on-site Georgia Power substation.

VoIP Security Best Practices

April 21, 2011

There has been much talk lately about VoIP security.

The FCC has a page to warn consumers and businesses alike about Voicemail hacks. (The FCC calls it Voice Mail Fraud but it's really about hacking the voicemail system to enable toll fraud.) This actually happened to me a few weeks ago. I never go into my vmail system because I get all my vmail as email.

Security VoIP and Otherwise

April 2, 2011

There are certainly security risks with VoIP. (And we will get to that). But let us not forget that TDM voice is easy to hack too. A pair of alligator clips and people can dial from your line or listen in.

Overheard in Vegas

March 16, 2011

Telesphere hired Andy Abramson's PR firm, Communicano.

AireSpring rolled out Meshed MPLS. What's that? It's how you connect the MPLS networks of four carriers to be able to cost effectively deliver MPLS service to anywhere in the US.

How Important is Retention?

February 27, 2011

For service providers who understand the cost of customer acquisition, retention is an important metric. In fact, Wall Street calls it churn. It has to remain under 2% to be considered under control.

For agents, retention is just as important.

Cloud Opportunities for Agents

October 17, 2010

I was on a Cloud panel for Comdex Virtual for VAR's. (You can see that Nov. 16-17, 2010). And I am moderating Demystifying the Cloud for Agents at Microcorp One-on-One on Monday morning. Then I will be presenting Put Your Head in the Cloud: Opportunities for Agents with Khali Henderson for TCA on October 29th.

What's Up with the New MegaPath

September 7, 2010

MegaPath just completed its three-way merger with Covad and Speakeasy. I had some questions for the company and Rich Sabin, Director of Marketing, was nice enough of answer them.

1. Now that Speakeasy, Covad and MegaPath are one organization, how will this affect the Channel (Agents)?

The New MegaPath remains committed to serving our partners, and we are in the process of rolling out an exciting new Channel Partner Program later this year.
