One Way to Privately Differentiate

June 29, 2015

The FCC recently ruled that phone companies CAN block robocalls - all types - if a customer requests it.

Did you know that there was an FTC Robocall Challenge in 2013. (Thanks to M. Leblanc for filling me in.) Nomorobo came out fo that challenge.

4 Acquisitions Noted (+2)

May 7, 2015

I missed the announcement that BAE was acquiring SilverSky. SilverSky was a combination of Perimeter Internetworking and Silver Sky that was a major cyber security and network security firm used by a number of large service providers. BAE is a large, global defense contractor.

"Metalogix, the premier provider of management software to move, manage and secure content for Office 365, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, Exchange, Box, Dropbox, Amazon, Google and other leading enterprise content management (ECM) systems, announced today that it has acquired MetaVis Technologies. MetaVis is widely known for its innovative and unified cloud collaboration service management platform." [I would have just said Microsoft Partner, but I guess that doesn't cover it.

A Spotlight on EarthLink

May 7, 2015

EarthLink has come a long way from the days of Mindspring and dial-up. That revenue did allow it to make big mistakes - Helio, Muni Wi-Fi - and make acquisitions to become the company they are today.

From dial-up to muni wi-fi to Clearwire 4G service, EarthLink has tried to stay close to its roots as a consumer ISP. Luckily, they made other moves to become a business servcie provider too.

Tidbits and Interesting Things Part 140

March 25, 2015

Some interesting services around the sector.

ADTRAN has field services that ITSP's can hire to perform site surveys and install Hosted VoIP deployments. (No idea about cabling, but that seems to be an issue for national providers. Local or regional providers tend to offer cabling for a price.)

Managed Security Portfolios Grow

March 4, 2015

In the wake of so much hacking, security concerns are starting to show up in the offerings from a number of providers.

As Trustwave claims, "Threats are growing more hostile. Budgets are tight. Skills are at a premium.

Spam Soap Going to J2 (with 7 Others)

February 23, 2015

Back in the ISPCON days, Spam Soap was a regular exhibitor. Spam Soap became Nuvotera, known as an email security services company and cloud services aggregator for MSPs. J2 Global via its Excel Micro business unit has acquired Nuvotera. This was just one of 8 acquisitions in one month for J2 Global.

It looks like Excel Micro will be taking over the FuseMail division of J2 as well.

2 Biggest Topics of 2014 and My Guess for 2015

December 30, 2014

The 2 biggest topics to me this year (2014) were (1) M&A AND (2) hacking.

Hackers had a field day with Sony, Target, Home Depot, iCloud (and celebrity photos) and 757 other organizations. [See VZ data breach report here.] Hackers had a field day with millions upon millions of passwords, emails and credit card numbers - over 83 million records. No one takes security seriously in the US - until after the hack happens to you (and you bear the cost of the breach, which for some companies is in the neighborhood of a billion dollars.)

There Were Some Bright Spots

December 26, 2014

There were some bright spots in 2014.

Canadian and UK companies reached out for consulting in 2014. Opportunities in LATAM also peaked on the horizon. But most of the attention was right here in the USA.

The Year That Was a Mess

December 24, 2014

We have a huge Net Neutrality debate, Open Internet fights (especially between Netflix and ISPs) and peering duels (between ISPs and backbones, notice the pattern?). Why? Lack of broadband competition.

Big mergers still in play: AT&T buying DirecTV to keep up on TV; and Comcast in a three way with Charter over TWC.

Moves in the Market

October 3, 2014

Windstream has acquired Chicago-based Business Only Broadband, a fixed wireless enterprise services provider with operations in Chicago, New York City, northern New Jersey and Milwaukee. [press release] While I know that BOB says enterprise broadband, I can't fathom what WIND is going to do with BOB. Other CLECs have acquired fixed wireless assets - including Covad/Megapath, Telepacific and recentlyAirband by UNSi (acquired by GTT this week). Fixed Wirless works when you have a team dedicated to it.
