Commencement Advice

"What does your college education mean?" is a good question from actor Matthew McConaughey to the graduates of University of Houston. [video on Daily Mail]

It is college commencement time in America and celebrities, politicians and CEOs will be bloviating on campuses everywhere. Here are a few noteworthy tidbits.

Mcconaughey continued with this: "Life's not fair. It never was, isn't now and won't ever be. Do not fall into the entitled trap of feeling like you're a victim. You are not."

He encouraged graduates to "define success for themselves and not let others define it for them." His own tales about Peru and bongos, I took to mean: Be Weird. That is advice that Tom Peters, Hugh MacLeod and Seth Godin give.

At GWU, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated, "The sidelines are not where you want to live your life. The world needs you in the arena. There are problems that need to be solved, injustices that need to be ended, people that are still being persecuted, diseases still in need of cure. No matter what you do next, the world needs your energy, your passion, your impatience. Don't shrink from risk." [cnet] [You can watch the speech on vimeo]

In a time where Facebook is full of outrage, people need to remember that a like or tweet or post does NOT produce any change. You have to ACT. And, really, in the US, the time to act is now. The runway for changing the course of things here is short - and gets shorter every day.
