And the State of Unified Communications is Good

July 24, 2014

In continuing my review of InformationWeek’s 2014 State of Unified Communications, I want to hit on several observations. The first is to address the lingering view that the desk phone will die and all workers will become mobile workers. It is going to happen. In fact, the InformationWeek survey found that a majority of workers (53%) have already switched to softphones, smartphones or other mobile devices.

Successful Teams Enable Successful Companies

July 22, 2014

Team building is lauded by some and despised by many, as its value to a business is thought to be primarily subjective. Yet, it is clear that having group activities fosters a better work environment and improves overall productivity. However, team building exercises or events do not necessarily create teams. Teams must be conceived and built by the company or department managers and then nurtured to mature and perform optimally.

The State of Unified Communications

July 16, 2014

The 2014 State of Unified Communications by InformationWeek surveyed subscribers both large and small and had some very interesting findings. The survey had 488 respondents with 31% having more than 5000 employees slanting the results more towards larger companies than small. That is consistent with current UC implementations and does not necessarily dispute the rise in interest by SMBs.

In listing drivers for the adoption of UC business continuity was either not included as an option or respondents don’t consider it a priority.

Wired for Speed - Congratulations, Bell Labs!

July 11, 2014

Bell Labs just announced that they have been able to transmit data at 10 Gbps over a 30-meter length of bonded copper. The research unit of Alcatel-Lucent used a prototype technology called XG-FAST, an extension of G fast technology, a broadband standard in the process of finalization by the ITU. Bell Labs has demonstrated 1 Gbps symmetrical over 70 meters using a single copper pair, but exceeded that using two pairs to achieve 10 Gbps. This establishes Bell Labs as new world record holder for data transmission over copper.

The benefit of such a technology is that it can accelerate the deployment of high speed broadband by extending the life of the existing copper in the home or business.

A Rose by Any Other Name...

July 8, 2014

Globally, people today have fewer and fewer phones tethered to a wall. It is far more likely we use wireless technology to communicate and because of that solutions like hosted Unified Communications are growing in demand. Yet, identifying the device in our pocket as a phone is erroneous. Yes, it makes and receives phone calls but it does so much more.
